Looking for a snake...Novice

herpz Nov 10, 2007 10:20 AM

I'm totally new to the world of snakes. I am much more familiar with lizards and torts.

I am looking for a snake that is docile, personable, enjoys being held and is legal in Texas...I know that is a lot but any help on this would be extraordinary.

I was thinking about a cornsnake, but I read that they just blacklisted them in texas??? Info on that would be nice also :D thanks

According to this article, TPWD says corns were added to the list by accident and will be removed. I see no word on when, or whether they will enforce the restirction until they are formally removed. You might give them a call and see what they say.

Oopsie.

Cornsnakes were accidentally blacklisted (which has been fixed) but that only regulated the sale, it didn't regulate possession.

If you are considering keeping and breeding your snake, you might want to consider the Texas regs regarding getting rid of babies. They are among the best regs in the land, IMHO, but they do place some minor restrictions on what you can do with native fauna.

If you keep non-native forms, then the only restrictions are on venomous and large constrictors, neither of which make good beginner species anyway.

Here's a comparison table I put together a number of years ago. It might give you some ideas -

I've seen that chart of yours several times on posts similar to this one, but I never really paid close attention to it until now. It's really pretty thorough and useful - nice work. I'm just curious about how you collected the data. Or is it mostly anecdotal?
