Basically RES are omnivores. I feed them mainly on turtle pellets. Occasionally I provide feeder shrimps or guppies. Mine has yet to accept any veggies. Feed them as much as they can eat within a short period of time. They do tend to grow pretty fast and they are usually good at begging for food. I feed mine twice a day.

RES start out more carnivorous and become more omnivorous as they age. Stay away from ham and other such meats--too fatty. An occasional piece of boiled white chicken meat is OK. If your turtle eats the lettuce (don`t feed iceberg), try some other veggies--chicory, mustard greens, carrots, dandelion, kale, for example.

I feed mine once a day, an amount that is equal to the size of his head (veggies are made freely available); after he`s 1 year old I will feed him every other day.

Hey your lucky mine won't touch lettuce... So I have to prepare carrots for them (just soften it up by puting in water and heating up then cool down in freezer for a bit heh)

But yes like others said, they eat just about anything. In the wild people say they are herbivors but I believe that's just because they are turtles and can't really catch their prey. I'm sure if they have a chance in the wild they'd eat a cricket, fish, guppy, or other reasonably caught food. So feeding them stuff like crickets is ok for a treat (maybe once a week) but lettuce (hopefully romaine or others mentioned in replys) and pellets are even better for him/her
