CUBANIGUANA23 Aug 23, 2003 10:13 PM

Can someone post some info about blue tegus and some pics. Info like what do the guys eat and how smart are they. Also what type of substrate do you use. Here is a pic of the phone I'm suppose to get on monday. Also can some one post picks of theirs. How much do adult blue tegus go for? Thanks an advance for any info you can provide.

Like dogs, they are only as smart as their owners... haha.
Price is irrelevant when it comes to any companion/pet.
I use (and correct me if I'm wrong anyone) angel hair for substrate, which is sold in nursery's as shredded redwood bark.
All my tegus seem to enjoy how it packs down until they want to burrow in it, so I keep it 8 inches deep on one side of the cage and about 4 inches deep on the other. It seems to absorb much of the doodoo smell for a good amount of time, and its cheap. Large rocks from neighbors yards under the UVB & ceramic bulbs help radiate heat and help them wear down their gnarly toe nails. I use big rubber coated gloves when handling my tegus because they can't help but scratch you if held bare handed. I recommend Blue's to anyone responsible enough to enjoy them, as they are daily maintenance that most people can not handle very well. Those people should enjoy fish as pets or snakes or other low
maintenece pets. Tegus will test your cage building ability to the max as well! If they call to you, embrace them.

Blah - I will have to argue with you on one little comment you made in your reply:
Snakes and fish are DEFINITELY NOT low maintenance animals. It takes as much or more time and effort to care for my snakes than it does to take care of my tegu. And keeping fish of any kind is a tough job. I've had every kind of tank you can think of since I was about 7. I would hope that you would refrain from making comments like this as it could lead someone to think that a snake or fish would be an appropriate pet due to the lack of effort it takes to keep them. This leads to mistreated, sick or dead animals. I understand it was just a flip statement, but please think about what you say.

:::stepping off my soapbox now:::

Thanks~!

I thought about it, and I would say it again.
