Are we breeding for the future?

jim_d Nov 11, 2007 09:55 AM

True locality does come down to honesty and integrity so I apologize nothing is 100% ! I understand some pople may not care what the parents and grand parents look like if they think the locality is pure. Pictures can be falsified, and often parents and offspring look nothing alike anyway. Pictures do not prove you are not being lied to, I don't mean that at all.

Someday I personally hope that I can produce animals that will be able to be bred as a pure line beyond our lifetime. When we are gone future breeders can use the pictures to help make up their own mind. I believe Dan is (or was) trying this with his website, and good photographic records will make it possible for our efforts to carry on well into the future.

To me, photographic records going back to w.c. are an important aspect to the whole point of locality animals. Pictures add value and interest to the animals, in my mind anyway.

As I stated, often the pictures of parents and offspring don't look similar to each other. I find it troubling that some people don't want to show pictures of the parents, maybe it is out of fear of being questioned, or out of fear that potential buyers will not believe the possibility that "those snakes" produced "these" babies?

I know Mike is doing the right thing by showing these pictures, and he is taking "the heat". It it shows his integrity he has in putting good records ahead of his dollars. I mean he spent the money on these animals and now the money might have gone partially out the window but more important he has some pure Huecos and additional snakes for his generic "Granite line" (a.k.a. hehehe snakes)

I have found similar feelings from others diminishing the value of picture records, and I simply don't understand why, pictures add value they don't take away value.

I think what Dan did with his Web site and documentation is INVALUABLE. It can't hurt at all, it can only help. I like the model and I'm going to use his example for any and every locality breeding project I undertake.

Joe,

Any chance of setting up a table or something in a similar format on say a private or password protected site? If so I would like to put some of my stuff in there?

These are f1's and the parents I collected.

And it can be done on a much larger scale. It would be a pretty huge job, but it could be done. I'm thinking of something where everyone can add images of their breeders and their offspring from those breeders with room for notes. Notes can be anything from where they were collected to who they came from, and of course, links to the individuals website and/or contact info. Additional notes for offspring can include who the animal was sold to. The job of linking it all together might be a bit of a radical job as it grows. But if names are provided, anyone that is interested could at least track down names within the website rather than having a hand fed link ready to go. Not saying you couldn't have links, but dang, after a while, the job of linking it all together would be HUGE.

If nobody else is interested, I might be willing to tackle it. However, keep in mind my web page building skills are pretty sad.

Brad,
We could easily tie this in to the other project I have going. It actually wouldn't be that difficult once the frame work is set up.
This is pretty much what we are trying to accomplish with the other mexicana stuff anyway. So yes we are pretty close to offering something along those lines. It's either going to be free or a few dollars a year to cover hosting, domain, and band-width.

I haven't been that interested in being listed on the alterna breeders list or the mexicana breeders list but something like this where I could upload photos and info to would be very exciting to me because it would serve as a good backup for my own records and would also be easier than making my own website. It would also be easy to simply refer people to the site for if they needed pics or info on my snakes. I would pay a few bucks a year for a service like that.

cool.... I think we are thinking voluntary donations of a few bucks anyway. We want folks to participate and not feel like they HAVE to pay, because the point is NOT to make money at all, but to provide a service that everyone benefits from, both the breeders and the buyers.

This is a great idea that I hope doesn't fall by the wayside. In time perhaps other species might be added-bairdi, subocs and leps come to mind. This would makw things far easier for those of us with sucky web page skills.

The Avalanche has already started-it is too late for the pebbles to vote....

It's already in the works, and actually has been for a few weeks. HCU members (you) will be doing the beta testing I'm sure.

That is a great idea. I thought of doing something similar with my animals based on this website. It has a great user interface.......

I think the Rosy Boa and pyro crowd would get in on this project as well, once the back end is set up applying it to additional species will be easy.. at least compaired to the "first draft"

Gee, If it could be as easy to upload info as say ebay, and it would create a grayband database dimilar to Dans web site it would be great! I would be up for donating something to it too.
