Getting my baby corn soon! Few questions

herpz Nov 11, 2007 12:05 PM

I'm going to start her off in a 10 gal but my main question is how do you guys regulate the heat in your terrariums? I was gonna buy a rheostat and a tempgun to make sure there were to good seperate heat zones in the terrarium. Can i make a homeade dimmer? What do you guys do for controlling the heat?

Also, how often do you feed a juvenile pinkies and should I put her in a different cage for feeding? (I would eventually love to have a dog tame corn)(link to a good care sheet is welcome too :D)

Thanks for all the help guys!!!

I use lamp dimmers. You can buy these at any hardware store. You just plug the UTH into these. It will help regulate how much power goes to the UTH so that you can control the temps. I have a temp gun and check all cages atleast twice a week.

The only downside to is that when the room temp changes, you have to adjust the dimmer a few times to try and get the proper temps. It means you have to be careful about keeping windows open and other factors that change your homes temps.

I'd save up and eventually get a good proportional thermostat.

If you take care of it your corn snake could live to be 20 years old. 100 bucks is pocket change in that context.

I started with a UTH and a regular herp thermostat,I think it was Zoomed. It was about $30. But if,,,I mean when,,cause you will get more snakes you will want to get a proportional thermostat like they say. You set it and it is great...and when you get it,spend alittle more and get the one with a night drop.
What type you getting? From where?

I do not provide any source for external heat to my Corn Snakes. My snake room stays between 70F-80F year round on its own, The most I do in summer time is turn on the ceiling fan but not because of the snakes, Because my computer systems in there are happier when there is air circulation in the room. I feed my hatch lings the same as adults, 2 mice for females and 1 for males every 7 days
