Calico genetics

Have calicos been proven genetic? recessive? ramdom?

To me its still a big fat stinkin ?? NERD has produced a tiger calico. So it seems to be genetic, however, the problem with calicos is this. When they are born they look normal, they dont turn until later in life. So trying to prove it is hard, lets say you breed calico to normal, then the offspring back to the calico, lets just say you get 25 eggs that hatch. Half should be calicos if its genetic, which ones? Its like playing the lottery. The calico trait also seems to realy spice things up when it comes to other traits. NERD has quite a few retics over there from calico x something else pairings that have thrown huge surprises out.
