Indigo.... Indigo-ette??

waspinator421 Nov 11, 2007 07:44 PM

After reading about Jennifer's predicament with sexing her CRBs, it got me wondering if it was possible to palpate adults to determine sex. I decided to bother my sleeping adults for a few minutes to give it a try. I started with Indigo.... nothing. Ok, let's try Flax... whoa, something there! Hmmm.... ok, let's try Indigo again... and again... and again........ still nothing.

Ok, time to whip out the probes. Indigo is now probing 4 scales?? He was sold to me as a proven breeder male, and probed 6 scales for me upon arrival. I guess I might have another female??

Oh and I also have a question.... I probed Flax too and got 6 scales on both sides. According to Jeff Clark's website: "Females will probe a distance of two to four subcaudal scales and males will probe to a depth of eight to twelve subcaudal scales." So what does 6 mean? Since I did feel a "bump" when palpating, I'm pretty sure he is male.... but what does 6 usually mean anyway?

don't know anything about the subject but those picture taking skills are awesome. So I get a ? for you Aubrey. I took some pics today of my hypo cuz when I was cleaning her tub she so beautiful-the most beautiful she has ever been. It was overcast today and she was just GLOWING!!!!!!!! When I whipped out the camera it was like 12 shades different from her actual color. She last shed on Oct. 20 so she is due in week and a half but the color was no where near reality. Was it the lighting or the camera and I got a Kodak 7 meg 5 zoom (I know horrible)??? Hook me up and set me straight pleeeeaaaasseseeee

Thanks for the compliment! I find that most (not all) of my snakes take better pictures in overcast/shady conditions. When I load them up on my computer, I almost always have to tweak them just a bit to make them look right. Perhaps this is your problem? Have you tried messing with the brightness or contrast levels of your photos?

I know how to solve your problem... just give her to me and I'll send you all the pictures of her you want!

of hets left and I would be very sad not to mention out of pocket on herlol but if you don't get some hets soon then what are you waiting on?? It should definately be on next years list. Yes I did try to tweak them today but nothing like she was. Also my red hypo bci is like maroon right now and has been in her water bowl for the last four days right after she pooped and I fed her and later on went into the water bowl and the camera is not doing its jobso definately on the want list but won't happen for awhile so you might have to suffer from my amateur pics but they are better than nothing I suppose

Hmmm... I don't know what to tell ya then. Your camera has got to be better than mine, so I am suprised you aren't getting any pics that you like. I guess just shoot a milliona any maybe one will come out right? LOL

Hey Aubrey,
Someone else had the same basic question a while back. I remember someone (probably Jeff) said that sometimes the male will clench up just after insertion of the probe, making it seem like it's either a female, 3 or 4 scales probe depth or even weirder, probing around 5, 6 or 7 scales. Making you go "WTF?"

Not exactly the best answer to your problem. It still leaves you going WTF. Do you trust the person you got him from? Maybe you can try it again a few more times? Maybe in the spring, you can put him with a female along with a known male and just keep an eye on them. BTW, nice pictures.

Rob, thanks for the info. It is possible that he clenched because I distictly remember him probing 6 scales when I got him... and now its 4. I really don't know who the guy is that I got him from, but he said that he bred him to his female for a few years. I would have a hard time believing that he got the two mixed up, or that he would lie about him being male. I would think that a liar would rather say he's a she than the other way around.

Only other thing that's really making me scratch my head is that I didn't feel anything on him when palpating, and I did on Flax. Who knows. I'll still try pairing him with Vermillion and see what happens. I hope that he really is male, otherwise Flax is going to have a lot on his plate.
