Corn snake probbing Question !!!!

tnherper Nov 12, 2007 04:10 AM

Ok I purchased to adult proven female corn snakes saturday. From a very well know local breeder and pet shop owner. I put them in with some other females that I have for the time being. Well after just a few mins. I noticed one of the new snakes doing the jerking move. Which really confussed me because I thought only males done this. So I got my probes out and sexed both of them. Both snakes are 4 to 5 foot long, and around 5 to 6 years old. Well they both probbed out at 12 plus scales deep. My question is, with them both being bred several times and full grown is it possible for them to probe that deep. Or did I get the short end of the stick and get two males. The owner swears there from his private breeding stock and has never lied to me before. Whats my chances here..

The twitching thing can happen with females as well, so that would not change my opinion on your new "Proven Breeder Female"... but, I have never heard of a female corn probing 12 scales deep??

So, with the limited info i have on your snakes.. i would say you have yourself 2 males..

Like Mike said, both genders exhibit the "jerky" motion - it's a common misconception that only males do it.

Your snakes are probing out as males - with females, a probe will barely enter the tail for more than the distance equal to the width of the tail at the widest part (near the vent).

All I'll add is, 4' or 5'? 5' is a very large corn. 12 scales would be huge.

Also I know the others have probed more than me, but I've also seen odd things. Snakes I'll call tweeners. Not sure if a male or a female. And deeper than what one would think normal for a female. Not sure about 12 scales? Also a a female that probes as a male as the male tighens up.

Our owners son is the best I have ever seen at probing.

Just be sure it is 12 scales, and not the distance of an average corns 12 scales and these are huge corns.

good luck.

It is tough to tell from the photo's... but they look like males to me..

either way, if your corn snake is probing 12 scales deep, regardless of the size of the animal i would say it's a male.

They're both definately males. You gotta be careful who you buy from. I've seen more mis-sexed and misidentified snakes snakes sold this year posted on the forums than all other years combined. I've also seen more hybrids passed off as pure being sold to people this year than all other years combined.

It pays to buy from sellers that you can trust.
