My snake is burying himself in the dirt.

efciem Nov 12, 2007 09:21 AM

Hey all,

I have a corn snake, have had him for a long while, but only recently he's started to dig himself into the soil I use as substrate in his housing..

he'll put his whole body under the dirt and just keep his head out..

I'm not sure why the sudden change in behavior..

any suggestions?
is there something wrong?

Hard to say if anything is wrong, as snakes will do that. IMO corns less than kingsnakes for example (kings can stay buried for a long time.)

Look for mites. Also, is the cage really dry? Maybe the snake is seeking humidity in the soil. That is one benefit from using soil - snakes will use it that way. Is the air temp really warm? Maybe the snake is avoiding heat. That is natural - snakes go underground to avoid extreme temps. Or, just to hide, find food, etc.

So, it may be nothing more than the snake using a good and comfortable hide. I would check anyway just to make sure.

Why use dirt in the cage with all the other options out there? Does the snake have a hide box? What are the temperatures running? To many unknown variables. Start with your basic husbandry of corn snakes see if your missing something. Good Luck

The days are getting shorter, this time of the year they are seeking shelter for hibernation in the wild.
