Took the kids to the Flume the other day...

EJ Aug 23, 2003 11:36 PM

We really didn't expect to find much but the evening was cool and it was just a nice time for a hike.
This little critter, a baby Granite spiny, was the first unexpected sighting. It looked like it was right out of the egg at about 2 inches in length.

You ever wonder what a horny toad, aka Horned lizard, sees just befor lunch... Here's an idea.

In one of the tunnels I found a lizard I always look for but rarely see. This was one of the neater specimens of Granite night lizards I've found.

This particular trip is never complete without a visit to the local bat colony.

We also found this huge ruber but it had just been hit by a car. There is only one thing worse than finding nothing...

I caught a unicolor boa in that spot back in 93 and a stripped cal king (brn/ylow)nearby. I actually stepped on a bat that was flying around my legs too. next time bring women and kill the lights as you toss gravel at the bats!! Its fun!!

doc, that flume is almost at the Mex. border east of San diego Cal. The snakes crawl into the tunnels along the top edge(shelf) to eat bats! They fall in and can't get out, easy picking sometimes. Nice unicolor looking rosys there.

Ps the bonehead ie; Croc hunter did a show in that region and showed that flume. He caught a helleri (so Cal) He also mis-identified a speckled(mitchelli) for a Ruber.(red diamond)

Thanks Chuck. I hope your summer has been productive and lucky?

The Flume sounds like a fun area.

If they do eat the bats... that would be noteworthy. Snakes do fall into the flume by accident but that is not a common occurance.
