Jags not impressive?*pic*

CraigS Aug 23, 2003 11:44 PM

Hi,

I was reading a couple of posts entered a while back where there were some comments made about Jags not being impressive. Having read that I couldn't help but try to sway those views. In an attempt to do so I have posted a pic of my 02' Hypo male that I just photographed. This picture has not been enhanced whatsoever and I can honestly say that he is even more impressive in person. He keeps getting better an better looking.

Best regards,

Craig Stewart

I am following the Jaguar projects with some interest for some years. But there is one thing I do not understand;

As far as I know, a "hypo" means a "hypomelanistic" snake. This name is commonly given to animals which show a heavily reduced or no black in their pattern, compared to the normal pattern of that particular (sub)species.
Now these, so called, "hypo" jaguars are beautiful animals but they rather do show more contrast than a reduced amount of black pigment in their pattern. They even have more black then normal Jaguars!
So I am personally wondering why these are called a hypo form????

Just a thought,

Wouter

Hi Wouter,

Thanks for your comments. I will attempt to answer your question as to why these are called hypo. When I use the term hypo I was in fact referring to hypomelanistic. I believe the term is used accurately when referencing this snake and others like it because the animal definitely has reduced black pigment in comparison to normal Jags (at least the ones that I have seen). Not only does the animal have less black but it also displays a reduced pattern. The most dramatic difference when comparing the hypo, to both normal Jags and normal forms is the lack of black tipping. Having said that I can recognize that all may not appreciate these attributes as being hypomelanistic. I believe they are.

Best regards,

Craig

That carpet (oh sorry Wouter i wont use the word "hypo) is one of the most awesome looking carpets I have ever seen. Before we all clamor to the art of "one up manship" lets at least acknowledge its beauty. I am sorry but your post was lame. In this hobby of ours a few "morphs" are labelled incorrectly, big deal. This is not some scientific genetics experiment, but rather an amazing hobby. Relax, enjoy, encourage and give credit where it is due. Who knows maybe someday you might be lucky enough to have a "hypo" jag. Wish I had one. Don.

Don,

I am sorry but by my last post I was calling this snake "amazing" and "beautiful", by my little knowledge of the english language this is an acknowledge of its beauty. I just wanted to discuss the correctness of the name given to this morph on the open forum to come to a better name, as there already hypomelanistic (caramel) coastal carpet pythons around. In the end when these are crossed with a jaguar, what must that be called?
You simply can't call a piebald or a leucistic snake "albino" because it has less black, you must look further then that and there is nothing scientific about that.
The best example I could think of are honduran milk snakes (Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis)these have many BEAUTIFUL "morphs" like tangerine and HYPO. Tangerine is a snake with reduced black (small black bands and no black tipping) and a hypo is a completely different looking snake with no black at all only greyish bands!
In this time with a great future of AMAZING new morphs ahead, the least we can do is spending some quality time on carefully thinking what to name a morph or at least be flexible about it when it is still developing it's colours. I wished I had one too, Wouter.

I didn't find the post lame at all! That Jag is stunning, I agree. But I also cannot see how it is classed as a hypo. So I can see where he is coming from! Relax!!

VERY VERY NICE. I also disagree with the previous post. I thought the jags at Daytona were very nice. Here is a pic I took at Daytona.
