On the cool side?...

MannyRottie Nov 12, 2007 07:57 PM

I just repostioned my racks and I was just wondering if these parameters were ok. My hot side of the rack is about 90-91 and the cool side is 80-82. I think this should be ok, but let me know what you guys think. I have the helix thermostat set at 98, so I could lower a few degrees if I have to. Thanks

Aren't you "cycling" for the breeding season yet???

MannyRottie Nov 12, 2007 09:43 PM

Not yet...I only have hatchlings so breeding is a few years away. I am just trying to keep them fat and growing. Are my temps adequate for this?

BuzzardBall Nov 12, 2007 10:05 PM

Sounds a little too warm!

I thought it may have been a degree or two too high. Thanks and I will adjust adequately. Thanks again, Manny

Most keep the adults @ 95 But, do what works for you. I keep mine at 90 cause thats where my snakes eat the best

If your basking side is at 90-91, your at an adequate temperature. I keep mine at 95 degrees and have done so for years. However, if the Thermostat is reading 98, and your hotspot is 91, something is wrong somewhere.

royalkreationz Nov 12, 2007 10:41 PM

My thermostat is at 95, but the cages are at 90-91. The reason for this is the fact that the temp probe is not mounted in a tub. It is mounted on the back wall of my rack 1" above the heat source between the tub and rack wall. Because of this, you set your thermostat a few degrees higher than what you want the temps to be in the tub. I do random checks 3-4 times a week with an infrared heat gun to keep track of my temps. They remain at what I set them at with no problem. So I don't think there is anything wrong with his setup.

Yeah I do exactly what you do except I check with a temp gun twice a day. I am very anal about certain things. Anyways, I guess I will keep the temps where they are at. Thanks

royalkreationz Nov 12, 2007 11:45 PM

I understand that. I used to do it, but they have been working so long without problem that I have probably become complacant. But, I have the recessed heat cable in my rack from AP Cages and it doesn't get super hot like heat tape. If my thermostat failed, I don't know that the the inside of the tubs would get hot enought to hurt the snakes. That doesn't mean that I don't care how hot it gets but more than that I feel it is a safety valve.

Ugh, checking temps twice a day? Theres plenty of times when I don't even walk in my snake room for 2 days at a time. You can tell you haven't been doing this for very long!

MannyRottie Nov 13, 2007 08:16 AM

I have not done this for very long, but that is the type of person I am. I make sure everything is as perfect as possible. I vacuum my home every two days. My friends tell me I am wierd and my wife tells me this is normal. Someone is lying, lol

JenHarrison Nov 13, 2007 01:32 AM

Those are the exact temps I've always kept mine at and they do great, so you should be fine.

I keep my hot end at 82-85 and the cool end at 78-80.

BelgianBeer Nov 13, 2007 03:11 PM

During cycling my heat is turned off completely and the entire room fluctuates between 70-76 with occasional dips into the high 60s.
