Leopard Amazon genetics question

Raizincain76 Nov 12, 2007 09:09 PM

I purchased a Leopard Amazon today and I will be picking him up this weekend . Can anyone shed some light on the genetics of this morph. I know its not a co-dominant trait, and I have been told its not a simple recessive trait. Who wants to try and explain it to me?

I want a lot of answers so I can try to figure out which direction to go in with the leopards breeding this season.
Thanks in advance.
Pics of leopards would be appreciated.
Solid black leopard pics would be nice too.

The only people you want to speak to about this are the originators of the trait, John and Jane Camp. They have produced multiple litters of leopards and what we believe are visual hets. Email me for their contact details.

In my opinion (as a geneticist) I beleive that this morph is an example of incomplete dominance.

Could you explain that term to me?
I have heard of incomplete dominance but I have never had a very through explanation.

It is kind of like what the general herp community calls "co-dominant." But not totally.

Incomplete Dominance is when the trait is passed on only patially to the young when bred to a "normal."

I do not know about the leopard atb, but what I know about genetics and incomplete dominance tells me that two "pseudo leopards" will make a "super leopard."

Here is the way it was explained to me from the Camps who breed them...

YOU NEED 2 LEOPARDS OR A LEOPARD AND A VISUAL HET TO MAKE LEOPARDS. I HAVE BRED LEOPARDS OUT TO OTHER ANIMALS AND HAVE GOTTEN NOTHING BUT NORMALS. WHEN I BRED LEOPARDS TO OTHER LEOPARDS OR TO THE NORMAL APPEARING HET MOTHER OF THE FIRST CBB ONE, WE GOT THE DIFFERENT TYPES INCLUDING THE BLACK PATTERNLESS AND THE VISUAL HETS WHICH RESEMBLE CALICOS AS THEY MATURE. EVERY NORMAL BORN FROM LEOPARD TO HET OR LEOPARD TO LEOPARD BREEDINGS HAS GRADUALLY SPECKLED UP AND ARE CARBON COPIES OF OUR ORIGINAL HET LEOPARD MOTHER. I BELEIVE THEM TO BE POLY-GENETIC FROM MY EXPERIENCE.

Matt-
Do you have any pictures of the hets? That way I could get an idea of what to look for.
Thanks

Hey Rolland,

The Camps would be the only ones to have pics of them.

I have a male het from the Camps. I will take pictures tonight and post them in a day or two.
