Spider doing some strange stuff...

MannyRottie Nov 12, 2007 10:48 PM

She used to either hang out outisde her hide box or she would stay inside it. The hide box is pressed up against one side of the tub. Now all of a sudden I noticed her staring at the sky and trying to hang out behind the hide box, which makes her also pressed up against the side of the rack, but in the open. Is this that star gazing problem that spiders are notorious for? Should I be worried and will she still be ok to breed or are her genetics terrible already?

How long since you fed her. My spider was pretty normal unless it was feeding time.

Its been about a week and a half since she has eatten. She is pretty eradic because she will be predatory for a while and then all of a sudden become almost friendly with the rats. Pretty wierd

feed her then and see if she stops. has to be a process of elimination.

my normal does that - flips the hides and sits in between them looking staight up, with 'chin' on the side of the rack

i wedged the two hides securely in place with some 2"x2" and he's using them more now.

in two months this normal baby has gone from scooting off straight into the hide and just poking his nose out in a wary fashion....to resting anywhere in the tank regardless of being hidden or not

wish i had a spiderman!

I will feed her today and see what happens. Ill let you know

How long have you had her? Maybe this is just one of her quirks. I have a normal male that when he's not hiding, is cruising the sides of his tub checking out the edges of the top. My boyfriend saw him just sitting and staring at the top one night and laughed and said the snake is probably just sitting there going "open open open open open" in the hopes of getting out.

Good luck with the feeding, and hopefully it's just a quirk that snake has

Thats funny because she does the same thing. Sometimes she will cruise around and stare up as if to same "open sesame." I really hope this is just a quirk, as she is a real sweet girl and she has a special place in my heart because she was my first snake ever. I have had her for about 7 months. I bought her at a show in Orlando from a breeder that will remain nameless. I read after the purchase that this breeder was not a very good one, and that his facility is nothing less of disgusting. If I would of known this I would of never purchased from them, as I now have learned that the small breeders are good breeders too. Anyways thanks

I just fed her and she ate with no problem. Funny thing is though she has eatten small rats before and is large enough to consume small rats, but will eat adult mice faster. She is almost hesitant to eat the small rats. Pretty wierd, but I do know that rats are more nutritous than mice so it kinda concerns me.

I have a spider thats been doing some weird stuff lately too.
She went from being a pretty normal snake (a bit timid) into being totally crazy now (aggressive and really REALLY odd).
For example, when I went into the room I keep all our snakes in to grab something, I saw her moving around so I stopped to watch her and she's sitting on top of her hide with half her body straight up in the air just waving herself around. Like swinging back and forth, upside down, in circles, and almost falling off the hide when she leans backwards (upsidedown-ish). Pretty much just staring at the ceiling moving her head all over the place.
She's done stuff like this before, and it just looks really odd. One time when I was holding her (before she turned all nasty) she just flipped out and starting flopping around wildly.

Also now that she's decided to be a biter, her head starts shaking a lot when she gets into her little S curl to strike.

I honestly don't know whats up with her, but I was thinking maybe she's just a bit retarded?
I asked about on a dif. forum and was told to check this one out because appearently spiders are known for odd behavior..

MannyRottie Nov 13, 2007 06:37 PM

I heard that Spiders are known for their odd, retarded behavior. I think it may be from over inbreeding. This would make sense because I bet not all spiders do this. Mine is still a sweetheart though.

I would venture a guess if potential customers would have been informed before they bought spiders most would have choose not to buy one. The guys pushing spiders are the ones saying it’s no big deal but I bet anyone who ended up with a "loopy" one wishes they could have made an informed decision about getting one. They should come with a warning. Many got screwed early on so they hid the truth as well. You cannot hardly blame them after spending big money they almost had no choice. I guess the originators screen name is appropriate.

What do you mean?

illbeyoursoldier Nov 15, 2007 07:46 AM

My Early06 Male Spider does the similar things as perfctlyflawed's spider does, and I'm sure we're not the only ones. I heard from a few people their spiders act in similar odd fashions. I named my male spider "Tangles," because of this. He seems to have no perception of his own weight and does corkscrews in the air. Frank thinks he's mildly retarded. He's much of a climber too; I gave him sticks in his box to give him something to entertain himself with despite the tub's height. He seems to like it.

But I have not been concerned, and I don't think its so terrible (however I would be concerned if my Spider was going to such lengths as perfctlyflawed's, no offense) because Tangles - like your Spider, MannieRottie - is a sweetheart. He's good tempered and has quite a personality about him. If mine suddenly grew an attitude, I think I'd feel differently. But I'll be breeding him this year and I've been told that other oddball Spiders have had no problems breeding beforehand. And I wouldn't be too concerned about her preference for Mice, ManneRottie. Rats are indeed more nutritions, but I have a couple snakes that simply prefer mice and have eatin mice all their lives and have no problems. I also have other snakes that will only take rats. The transition from mice to rats can be more difficult for some than others. Hope this helps.
