Breeding normals and Okeetees

wvherp Nov 13, 2007 10:53 AM

I know Okeetees are "normals" but what happens when an Okeetee is crossed with a plain normal corn? Is the gene recessive and the offspring look normal while being het for Okeetee, or will the Okeetee gene be dominant? Just asking as I am breeding a normal female with an Okeetee male for the first time next spring.

You should get snakes that vary a little inbetween the two.

Okeetee is not a gene.

Breed a Virginia corn to a Miami corn, what do you get?

Same thing, just another locale. A very very nive one. But just a locale, and breeding to a normal is outcrossing ALL the genetics.

IMHO = in my humble opinion

I believe a lot of people call these classic corns. HerpZilla is right. They will be all normal with varying looks ranging from Okeetee'ish to regular normal and everything inbetween.

Thanks for the info. I am very excited about this project and hope I can achieve positive results.

a true Okeetee corn IS a normal corn. simply one that comes from a population of corns from the low country of jasper county south carolina, more specifically the okeetee hunt club and surrounding area. Many simply call a nice red/orange corn an Okeetee, and from what i have been told it is accepted in some circles. me, i'm in the old dog category and when i hear Okeetee corn i think of Tillman,Ridgeland, etc.just my 2 cents worth.

I with you Howie. If it didn't come from Jasper then it's a "lookatee".

TV? I hope you got it on tape.

elaphopeltishow Nov 14, 2007 09:41 PM

i think dennis mom taped it all. will work on getting it to you if i ever get it

But is an Okeetee a normal or a natural? OK, just kidding.

Someone did state last year in these repeat topics there is an Okeetee locale, and okeetee phase. Please note I capitolized Okeetee for locale.

Yeah I have a personal project down the road. I have a crimson and an abbott okeetee. I want to cross them and hope to get a combo of some looking "okeetee", some "Miami" and plain normals, het for hypo. You would think that the offspring colors would be slightly less variable, as normal wild corns since the parents lines were selectively bred over time to consistently show certain colors or patterns. Just a thought, am I off base on this thought?

cochran Nov 15, 2007 11:44 AM

Last yr.('06) I bred my male Abbott to a Va. locale corn. Some of the babies looked just like my pure Abbotts. You can end up with some real lookers! Good Luck and post pics when you have little ones!, Jeff

I am pretty technologically challenged, but I will try to post pics when/if I get any babies. I have no locale info on either the male or female. Got the female at a show in Pittsburgh and my brother got his male in Columbus. Neither place, I believe, had this info. Right now it doesn't matter to me, I just want to get it right.
