Bentonite Clay and Tortoises

APLAXAR Nov 13, 2007 01:56 PM

Hey Gang,

I posted this question on another forum and got no answers so I thought I would post it here.

There is a suppliment that I have been taking for about a month now called Bentonite clay, its main use is as a detoxifier for the GI track. it is supposed to absorb toxins, impurities and pesticides that have settled in the intestinal walls. now when it comes down to it is is literally liquified dirt/volcanic ash.

Now being that is it just dirt/clay of the earth, i was thinking of adding it to my torts food. and seeing as i dont always feed organic i figuered it would be a good thing to add because to what ever pesticides would be used in growing conventinal foods.

What do you all think, i am going to used it a few times a week on the veggie offerings and see how it goes, i dont see how it would be harmful, torts eat plenty of dirt in the wild

thanks for your time
Adam

Why not buy organic produce or grow your own or collect weeds from non-sprayed areas? I think those solutions are more appropriate.
But hey, let me know how it works if you do try it.

I feed roughly 85-90% organic, but its isnt always available, so i have to get some stuff conventional, and we dont have a very long growing season in the north east, i did have a garden this summer but everything in it has been brown for over a month.

i just thought that the clay might be an interesting suppliment

Its not a good idea to use clay often. It binds electrolytes and prevents their absorbtion, the same way it bind toxins. for instance it will directly bind potassium and prevent its absorbtion from the gut causeing Hypokalemia, which can cause serious problems.
