leopard or pickerel??

cochran Nov 13, 2007 04:36 PM

Is this a leopard or a pickerel frog? Also, would he be toxic to use for scenting pinkies? Thanks!, Jeff

That doesn't look like the Leopard Frogs that we have in my area, but I've never seen any that young.

I don't think there's a problem with using them for scenting, but for ATB's I don't think their scent will help.

Thanks Mike!,I just found out,the frog is a pickerel frog and it is toxic.I just bought a pr. of neonate ATB's that weren't started feeding.Treefrogs are impossible to find this time of year.Do you have any alternative scenting ideas?? Thanks!, Jeff

Try hopper mice. They like the movement. Thats what I start all my babies on.

Here's some proven approaches:

Live crawlers/fuzzies/hoppers left in their box over night

Frozen/thawed (the tissue breakdown from the freezing and thawing alters their scent of the flesh)

Super-heated (use the hottest water you can get from your tap, then microwave it for 40-50 seconds, then dip the room temp fuzzy, either F/T or fresh-killed, in the water for a few seconds and offer it with tongs)

Bloodied-head crawlers (a small cut between the ears, just enough to draw blood)

Brained crawlers...I personally have never tried this techique.

Headless crawlers...this one almost always works for me. Take a frozen crawler and crack the head off before thawing it. The baby ATBs will litteraly stick their nose into the open neck and sniff it real good and almost imediately coil it up and eat it. You can also fresh kill a crawler and cut the head off, but it's much cleaner to crack it off while they're frozen.

As far as scenting goes, I've never had luck with that.
