Weights for adults

boxienuts Nov 13, 2007 05:35 PM

My female snow iowa plains garter now eats crawler mice 3-4 at a time every 4 days, she just attachs them from my tongs and sucks them down is seconds, she has a freakin ferocius appetite, and she weighs 98 grams, the male eats much less and weighs about half that 47 grams. My question is does anybody out there keep records of weights and if so what is an average weight for full grown adult females and male, and what would be the upper end of the scale for garters?
Thanks
Jeff

There differences from speci to speci but for a group like common, plains and wandering garters adults will become more than 100 gram for females and normally less than 100 gram for males.
I remember nothing more than 600 gram of weight for a garter (gravid female)

Hey, thanks for your input. My female born this summer already weighs 120g so I wonder if she would be ready to breed this spring, if I cycled her for a month or two or would it still be better to wait untill next season? There seems to be a lot of info on this subject for ball pythons but not for garters.

My WC female radix only weighs 55g and had babies this year... She is probably about twice the size she was when she had her babies too (only 2 live though, and I think 6 or so slugs...). Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks for the reply, my guess is that she would have had more live babies if she had more size and age. She probably will do better next year. What happened to the garter poeple? They must be brumating with their snakes

Agreed, hopefully she'll be able to use stored sperm since I don't have a male to pair her up with. This forum is pretty dead it seems like...
