Incubator and Substrate ???

Z_G_Reptiles Nov 13, 2007 08:20 PM

Hi, this is my first year at trying to breed egg layers so i'm new to the whole incubator stuff first question

-Im thinking of getting the Thermal Hova Bator Incubator, would this be a good choice for something cheap and easy? do any of you have any experience using them for blood eggs?

-Second, temps at 92-91 right?
-What Substrate do you use?
-Do you only mist before you put the eggs in or do so daily to keep humidity? whats your guy's methods?
-Do you have to keep the eggs facing in the same side up as they were first laid?
- And last, whats the most effective way to get the eggs away from the female without hurting the eggs?

Thanks,
Zack

P.S. Here's a pic of my pair

I really do not like the hovabators for bloods, they dry out way too easy. Also the temps should be more like 89F-90F over this you start getting egg death and deformaties. You need a good thermostat for this and I only use digital proportional ones like Helix or Spyder Robotics. I use a modified cooler for my incubation with 100% hatch.

I am by know means an expert. I had my first cluth last spring.
based on all the advice I was so kindly given this is what I did-
we made an incubator from and old beverage refrigerator using heat tape, fan and a helix thermostat. ( when I say 'we' I really mean my Hub.LOL)

I used pearlite... as I was told it was more forgiving if you get it too wet.

Incubation temp fluctuated between 87-90
I had 33 eggs a 100% hatch rate (even the 3 rollouts).

What a sight!

Box 'O Borneos!

I can't tell you howmany times thoughout the process I tbought I messed up... what a joy and relief it was when they finally hatched!
Best of luck to you!
