Scenting for hatchling nelsons

thomas_matthew Nov 14, 2007 10:29 AM

i hatched out around 20 nelsons this year, and most have been nothing short of a disaster to work with.
i am concerned that it may be the line i am working with, as i know that this sometimes comes in to play.
i have tried scentingwith an anole i had around, but none have been interested in that.
could anyone suggest something different, as i would hate to lose what is around 10 of them, most albinos, if i could prevent it.
thanks in advance.

Try a Mediteranian House Gecko or a skink. Derek

How long since they hatched? Like pueblans, nelsoni seldom are a problem to get started, as long as they have had time to absorb all the yolk supply they hatched with. This will vary from clutch to clutch. For example, I had a clutch of pueblans hatch in early August-but none would even look at food until October - at which point they all eagerly fed on unscented pinks within days of each other.

If they still look relatively plump, I wouldn't sweat it. If not-the house gecko suggestion is a good one.

Well these hatched in august, and i have had nothing but problem after problem with them. they were two seperate clutches, and some of the babies are quite small so i have started assist feeding them some mouse tails.
i am going to try the house gecko though this week and see if that won't work for me.
thanks for your reply.

Are you housing each snake in an individual enclosure?
This can be very important in getting baby snakes to eat.
I have found Nelson's to generally be problem-free feeders.
Although like the other person who posted said, sometimes they take awhile to get started.

yes, i hatch out several hundred babies at a time of various species, and everything gets it's own slot in a rack.
i am going to try the house gecko this week. thanks for your response.
