What are the genetics of an Axanthic? Are Red Axanthics only seen in het individuals or can you breed two Reds and get all red offspring. I've also read that that you have to breed Axantics of the same "line" to Axantics. Why? Thanks in advance!!!

There are several lines of recessive axanthics. They have some similarities in appearance so all get the name axanthic but I think there have been breeding tests to show that they are different incompatible mutations. I'm not sure if there have been any actual homozygous X homozygous tests but enough has been done for the general consensus that they aren't compatible.

I think there have been a couple new lines the last few years from NERD and I think it was "DM". One or both of these might have been proven compatible with one of the original 3 lines, I don't remember for sure. Also, recently VPI posted a new line of really different looking small dark axanthics that would seem likely to be a new gene and incompatible with the others.
There is also a co-dominant line called red axanthic. Again, it appears to be a new mutation and is presumed not to be compatible with the recessive lines. With the red axanthic line the hets are visible blackbacks with reduced yellow and are called "het red axanthic". The homozygous red axanthic is the fully axanthic animal with some reddish pigment remaining with the dark.
