Updates on shy breeder spider

python2000 Nov 14, 2007 03:49 PM

Hi!
I posted some time ago about a spider male (born in giune 06, 1100 grams) and now things are just so:

I cooled the females and the male at 85-86F during the day and low 70's in the night (8 hours with the lower temps), i reduced the photoperiod instead of 12/12 to 10/14 and i stopped feeding. I've kept them separate for over 2 weeks more than when i tryed the first time (i thought was too early) then 2 days ago i placed the bigger female (1700 grams, 4 years old) in the male's cage in the evening and nothing! They were cruising the cage together again at night and in the morning they were coiled together relaxing in the hide box and remained that way all the day at the evening they restarted to move around the cage without any sign of interest. The male has sperm plugs every day and two days ago i handled it one second and when i took it's tail, one hemipene come out by itself returning back immediatly. I'm really concerned! What's going wrong with them? Now i tryed another female and it's the same. What you think can be the real reason of that? The male is mature enough and the females are pretty old and quite big.

I'm interested if that's happening to you too sometimes and if i have to think he will never breed this year or i can still hope he will start.

Sorry for the long post.

Flavio

People seem to forget.

The SNAKES decide when it is time to breed!!! If you jump the gun and they don't breed you are puzzled.......

They are not ready and you are trying during a time many of our snakes do not breed. Some of the chief breeding time is the beginning of next year!!!!

Remember, breeding snakes is by far an exact science!
Just when we think "we got it" we often find out that we DON'T!!!

STOP HANDLING THEM . just leave them be. you've got six more months to get them going. like nerd says, this ain't an exact science. your temps and all sound fine, just put your two snakes in the box and let nature take over. patience is key, and the less you f with them, the better. kd
