burnziesballs8 Nov 14, 2007 06:11 PM

Hey guys.... just rebuildng a new reptile room.... pretty large and empty all cement blocks... (supposedly used to be a panic room) ... I am putting alot of electricity through the room with the plugs every 4-5 feet 6 feet up on the wall.... going to drywall and insulate it....leave the floors and ceilings i think.... there is a big working sink just outside the room..... does anyone have any tips or ideas to make it better? i think i was just goin to put a couple space heaters to keep the room at an ambiant warm temp and then some fans to help circulate the air....anything else would be awsome thanks! sorry for being so long

Sounds cool. As far as heat goes, I found a mini slit air conditioning unit that is ductless with a night drop and it automatically turns on the heater or ac to get the room the temp that you have set. Show us some pics.

Your snake room sounds really nice. The only reccomendation I would make is to have the sink inside of the room. I have a sink in my snake den and I couldn't be happier with its location. You can see the sink in the bottom left hand corner of the second photo

Here is a photo of my room. I hope it helps with your plans.

Brent
Don't bother doing any of that stuff. I'm going over to your house tomorrow night and picking up your collection. I don't plan on giving it back so why bother. This will teach to go out of town when your in the process of moving. HEE HEE HEE

That is a real nice snake room. What are the dimensions of the room? Looks perfect for a home set-up. I only work with BP's so it would even be better for me. I see some large snakes in that photo. Very nice and I do like the sink in the room as well.

The dimensions of my snake den are 10 feet wide X 22 feet long.

All walls and ceiling are totally insulated with R-30 batting. I did a study and I think you'll find that batting is a better insulater than styrofoam. Another important feature is that I have a sky light in the middle of the den.

An important feature other than four socket electrical outlets every 5 feet is that all of my racks , vision cages and even my incubator are on wheels.

I don't know about everyone else, but about three times a year I leave a cage door open or a tub not quite closed enough and a snake will get out. It's much easier to go field herping in my den when all of the obsticles are on wheels.

Good luck to everyone's season.

Thanks for the info. I've got to agree with you about putting everything on wheels. Again, nice set-up.

Th wheels are good thinkin ahead strategies. I believe a window might be necessary because of a day/night cycle. The reptiles need to see some sort of light cycle. Just something to think about.

I agree 100 %. I mentioned in an earlier post that I have a sky light in the roof of my den for natural lighting to come in.

....instead of drywall / sheetrock.........think of styrofoam sheeting.......?..they sell 3/4 inch to 2 inch styro boards and some are even the tough stuff that is coated.......will take the moisture if present and will keep the heat bills down and you can put it all around and make it tight and baby snake escape proof...

I wish I could redo my room and make it all double 2 inch foam board all around.....well......2 walls single sheet to block and 2 walls foam inside and outside studs....

Hey,

If you use space heaters, use a professional thermostat. I depended on one once, came home and found it malfunctioned, and lost almost my entire collection.

THERMOSTAT on the SPACE HEATER!!!!!

Steve.

P.S.- Exhaust fan on a timer, intake vent for fan.

I would run a 20 or 30 AMP circuit breaker for all plugs and the wire should be depending on the breaker, but 12 gauge should be plenty. This is to ensure that there is always enough juice for all the heating elements you will be plugging in. I would take a real good look at the floors. Make sure that you are satisfied with them. It would be easier to redo the floors when their is nothing in the room as opposed to removing a room full of reptiles to do the floor later on. I, personally would install tiles, but for the heat carpet might be better, but maybe smellier. It will absorb the scents of the room and accentuate it. Tiles are the way I would go. Also if you do the foam insulation, whih is a great idea, you may want to install purple board. It looks like drywall but is mold proof. It should be next to the drywall and greenboard in Lowes. I was a contractor for a while so if you have any questions feel free to email me. Good luck and post pics

i've pulled my share of romex, and cutting in panels, etc.

14 gauge romex for 15 amp breakers
12 gauge for 20amp
10 guage for 30amp
...and so on

Yeah I know exactly what wire goes with what. Thats why I said that 20 or 30 breaker, but that since 12 gauge is more than plenty then a 20 amp breaker should suffice.

>>Yeah I know exactly what wire goes with what. Thats why I said that 20 or 30 breaker, but that since 12 gauge is more than plenty then a 20 amp breaker should suffice.

...not doubting you....just clarifying what i read.Which could have possibly have been misconstrued to mean 12 guage wire was sufficient for a 30amp breaker.Which it isn't.

90% of the reason i posted anything at all was for the rest of the readers to this forum...So relax,i'm not being combative here.

Hey Brent,
The only thing missing in my snake room is an autographed action shot of you hanging on the wall. I have a spot right beside my Ray Emery picture that would be perfect lol. I wonder if you and Ray are the only 2 NHL'ers that keep snakes as pets? Do you know others guys who are into herps? The Wild and yourself are having a great start to the season, keep up the great work! Here's hoping for a Sens/Wild final, I won't lie though, I'd be chearing for my Sens lol.
Take care,
