Does size matter in a male for breeding?

HerpZillA Nov 14, 2007 08:56 PM

I've not done a lot of breeding. I try to listen to people I trust and have experience. I often hear the male snakes that are slighter in size, not length, make better breeders than heavier and obese ones.

People here have a lot of corns of various sizes and ages. Lets face it a corn in a 20-30 even a 55 can get a bit over weight. Do you find these males with extra weight are not as "spunky" in the spring time? I know my best male ball python was tiny compared to others. But 1 snake does not a survey make.

I ask as my male had plumped up on me. I have no 08 projects of importance, unless females come into the shop worth breeding.

So, does size matter?

You would be surprised at what a few good handling sessions can do. I bet you could have him slimmed down in 2 weeks....

I handled him a lot when I first got him. But I'm not even sure I mentioned his crazy attitude? But he is nuts. I took him to the shop as everyone said the same thing. Just handle him. I opened the tub and he popped up like a cobra rattling his tail.

One guy just busted up laughing. I actually like him just the way he is. I do not have to have a super passive snake to like him. He may end up in a 75 gallon I have.

I'm just worried he's going to be heavy at breeding time, and not as interested as I want.

he will be interested but might not be fully up to the task if over weight. mine turn in to solid rocks of muscle in the spring so maybe yours will lose a little weight then. many go off feed and lose a little that time of year anyway especially when a girls around

My particular male is heavier than I would like. But NOT soft.

He struck my hand once and grabbed it. He is not out of shape in a muscular way. But I have heard from well known breeders that the almost skinny males seem more active to mate.

He's in a low tub. He is toned. Just carried a little weight.

The post was to ask about size in general, not my male really. He'll be moved into a tank soon. So more room, but he is one of teh strongest corns I have enver handled.

Again, it was breeding in general, on all snakes.

Sorry, I suffer from optical migraines, and misread your post. I thought you said simmer down.

He needs a big cage. As he hates to be handled. But I understand.

hey tom im honestly not sure about size when it comes to breeding as all my males are huge but if he is young i would let him be with the female for a while when breeding. just cause you see it once doesnt mena he did the trick let him go at it for a few weeks i let my males go at it for 4-5 days and give them 2 days off and give it a go again until i know the girl is gravid
i know you dont PLAN on breeding but if the chance comes along take it

Hay Adam. Yea if something comes along I will of course go for it. I never go what will drop in the shop. My first corn, which I was not into, nor had any idea of morphs was a freebie drop off. She never sold for $125, so I took her home. Sadly she died after her first clutch. She was a super bloodred, and there was no male available. I gave it to a friend and she bred, but stuff happens, I know that oh so well. She had 9 babies I think? I wish I had them all back.

This was her. And why I'm still hooked on bloods. Actually Kathy Love identified her as a bloodred. And we spoke on the phone. What can I say, she was super nice.

At the time I knew nothing about corns. Still seems close to nothing lol,,, as so much is happening.
