When to buy?

phiber_optikx Nov 14, 2007 10:13 PM

I know there is no real "right" answer to this since they would have different hatch dates, growth rates, etc. BUT say I wanted to breed an 07 male in the winter of 08.... Is it possible without power feeding? When would you say he would have to be bred/hatched by? Very early 07 or basically anytime throughout the 07 season? Just curious.

this topic lately. I prefer one year but others breed them the same year they are hatched. There are no guarantees that any animal will breed at any certain time.

The best time to buy....

Just before the other guy tries to get it.

When you get time, send me that price list and information about that email on those caramel albinos I forwarded to you a while back. I can't buy any snakes if I don't have a price list LOL. I know you have been busy, so whenever you get time is cool with me.

It depends on how well they eat....

Remember- power feeding is NOT giving them as much as they WILL eat.
Power feeding is placing previously killed items in their open mouth while they are swallowing- not feeding them generously.

Basically if I pick up a male in early 08, it could possibly breed the next season. Thanks guys. Not in a big hurry to breed, just curious to know when they can.

There are a couple of things to consider - mostly that snakes grow at different rates - and breed at different times - I have three (early to mid) 07 males - they range from 500 grams to 900 grams - only one of them is currently in breeding mode the other might go later but right now he just wants to cuddle. I have an 06 that wants nothing to do with the ladies.

Also - even tho we see clutches produced year around a majority don't hatch until spring - if you really want to look around and pick up a nice CBB it may not happen until the middle of the year - then you might be pressing your luck for getting him to breed.

Well, it isn't like he absolutely HAS to breed that first year. I was just curious. Either way, by the time anything I can afford would breed, the babies would be worth less than normals

Buying an early 07 and getting offspring from him in 08 is far from impossible...
I got really lucky with a nice clutch pastels in 06(6eggs,5pastels).From an early 05 male.So it does happen....To be honest,i wish i had dedicated another female to him that year, but hey,i still got my share of co-doms!

Funny thing is...From two clutches of his this last season. There was a total of 4.3 pastels...Kept 1.2,and got my cash back from the original male two years into the so called market crash.(Which i promtly reinvested since some folks were freaking out.)

My spider, mojave, and clown males are all '06 animals (the mojave being a late '06) and all 3 are over 700g, producing tons of sperm plugs, and breeding their girls like champs. Hopefully all will take and I'll have some nice babies this spring. That doesn't mean every male will be ready at 12-18 months old, but many can be. So if you want one to be ready in '08, look for an early to mid-'07 animal that is feeding and growing well.
