Anyone keep a generator just in case?

Linda G Aug 24, 2003 08:33 AM

Now that fall is approaching I am considering getting a gas
generator in case of power failure in the winter. I am
wondering if any of you have one and if so did you
have it wired with outlets by an electrician or do you just
run an extension cord if needed? I imagine that having it
wired is more safe??

Any input
Linda

I have two power sources, generator and solar. Solar is more expensive to set up, but in the long run is the best - gasoline smells horrible, is expensive and the larger generators are loud no matter how good they are. I'd consider setting up a solar system if you are serious. These days there are places that sell solar equipment just about anywhere, complete with instruction. You could back it up with wind power if you live somewhere with any wind whatsoever. However, if you decide to do generator, yes, mine is wired - I actually have two generators - one large and one small - and I can plug either one into my cabin wiring, as I see fit. To run the vacum cleaner and other power-greedy items I need the big one, but for my XM radio, a dvd player, electric lights etc the little one is fine. I have a neighbor that uses her little one(a Honda) to power her sewing machine, she's a quilter.

Just kidding. In all seriousness that is very kind of you to be willing to do that with your herps. If you have a gas water heater another thing you could do is put a large tub of hot water in your iguanas cage (covered so they can't get to it) and then cover the cage with blankets. Just a thought.

Peter, what a great idea. Thank You. I thought of a candle but could not figure out protection for the candle or the igs.

get a diesel one, the little gas ones aren't all that powerful.
