herpz Nov 16, 2007 08:20 PM

Ok...My guy eats healthyly...Occasionally vitamins/calcium on his food...Summer he eats wild weeds and my lawn(no chem.). also, he occasionally gets romaine lettace, bell peppers, carrots, sometimes a bit of fruit, mustard/collard greens.

This is the link to the question I have about his shell problem...
Is there a shell rot or problem?

He looks a wee bit bumpy but there really arent too many Sulcata in captivity that are smooth these days. I dont think he looks bad at all.

If you are talking about the white areas in between the scutes, they appear to be normal areas of new growth, not shell rot. The new shell growth has a very thin layer of translucent cells on it. gradually these wear away leaving a new shiny normal shell area. If you wash the tortoise off and gently brush the white areas, you will see nice clean normal shell colored growth underneath. Shell rot would go through the entire colored outer layer to the underlying bone and would be much harder to remove. When shell rot is removed, a crater is left which is whitish and often even bleeds, not what normal shell would do.
