I think i know how to make cages "Escape Proof"

birdhou53 Aug 24, 2003 09:13 AM

I don't have corn a snake yet. but i think that your cage probably only had half a log for ur corn to hide in? I think you should put more hide spots for them....also remember clean water....that way they might feel like staying instead of escaping you know? well that's just my opinion and what i think....im no expert lol

Think about it, relate it to our everyday life, would u want to stay in a nice house where u feel comfortable or would u rather go outside? Or would u rather stay in a home that has no furnishings and feels uncomfrotable or would u rather go outside? Get where im going?

Good luck on finding your snake =)

Off topic for the corn forum? YOU BET! Just wondering, since you are young, and just getting interested in snakes. I had a lot to learn the first time I got an iguana. I have one now that I have had for several years. Check out the iguana forum if you have not. Much of the information that the pet stores, and even the books, will give you is just plain wrong. Good luck with your ig and your future corn snake. Duffy

hey duffy, thanx for asking =)

well my iguana is doing good(eating well and looking healthy)but he is still VERY jumpy....he is probably a captive from the wild i think....even when i look at him, he runs and thrashes and jumps all around lol

oh yeah i have no problems with him..iguanas are VERY hardy actually, they just poop a lot thouhg, lol...they dont need to be "misted" twice daily like all the books said, when he wants water he will just come stare at my spray bottle outside the tank, lol so i will spray him...i ran out of newspapers thouhg haha

how about ur iguana? make sure u have enouhg space thouhg.....coz iguanas get real big, they are nice pets thouhg

if i keep a lizard, it will either be a Bearded dragon or a Frilled Lizard ( they look so cool but are SOO EXPENSIVE)

well take care =)

These animals normally cover quite a bit of territory in their search for food and mates. It's seems like it would be natural for snakes to try to explore their territory and getting out of a cage to do it is a result. Any hole a snake can get through is a door to the rest of their range. Providing a suitable enclosure is an important part of husbandry. Taking the animal out of their normal environment doesn't stop their instinctual need to search for a better environment. They don't know that outside of their cage isn't as suitable an environment as what you've set up in the cage. Snakes in my experience will excape any time there is an opening they can squeeze through unless they are too ill to make the effort. Well fed, lots of hides, fresh water, perfect temperatures don't really matter if the animals normal range is a few miles in diameter they will want to roam. Just an opinion...

hehe if that's the case, my snake will not want to escape then =P i got a 27 gallon tank thats 3 feet long and 1 feet wide...its also about 15 inches in height...ill be keeping just one corn snake in there.....and maybe i might keep another corn snake next time in a 10 gallon tank ( i have seen adults in a 10 gallon tank at the pet shop)

hehe

I don't know that you got the gist of my message. I am sure that in the wild a cornsnake roams quite a bit to seek a possibly better environment. A large cage for an adult is a great idea but even the largest cage is still a cage- they will want out. The best we can do is make sure that our small habitats meet all the needs of a captive snake with the exception of natural range. So you still need to make your cage excape proof!
Good luck with your corn- don't worry so much about making it "happy" as keeping it healthy and safe. A lot of cage accessories are more for the human observer than the creature that has to live with it. Look at who's got the money... Happy is hard to demonstrate in reptiles. Healthy is a definite.

it's a happy snake and I'm a happy owner.

(and by shed I mean in one-piece shed, not crusty piece-by-piece sheds)

petstores rarely keep their reptiles in a large enough cage. Though adults are in a 10 gal tank I beleive that is too small for a full grown snake. From what I read it seems a 20 gal is more appropiate for a full grown snake.

petstores are often very limited in what space they can provide for their reptiles, most keep them in as small a cage as possible as they hope to only have the reptile for a short period of time. Most petstores don't even provide proper care or food for their reptiles. Never take what they say about the care of an animal as true, unless you can find facts from other sources to colaberate it.
