Stuck Eye Cap!!!!

arkon Nov 17, 2007 03:57 PM

Hello everyone, one of my northern female pines just shed and I noticed the right eye cap is still there. I have had her for about 3 months and this is the 2nd time she has shed, all the other sheds came off completely. Does anyone have any remedies, soaking her in warm water did not loosen It up.

I tried very gently with tweezers (very, very gently) and It was not budging. I have been told scotch tape but I dont think that is a good idea!!!!

I have her and others on aspen with large water bowls, heat tape and one overhead 15 watt aquarium bulb. The cool side is 76 and the warm side is about 83 degrees. I just recently started using the heat in my house which is very dry and probably killed the humidity in my house and some what in there enclosure. The other 3 northern pines shed recently with no problem but I may have to change there substrate or start misting every now and then (any suggestions on the humidty?)

Sorry for the long post but I always like to give/get a backround on a situation when giving/getting advice. I tried to take some pics of the eye cap but they dont come out. I will post some pics of my pine crew when I get a minute though.

Thanks for any advice, Jason

You're going to need some 2:1 oil, 30 weight ball bearings and some gauze pads...

Seriously- don't sweat it, leave it alone, and it should come off on it's own. If not sooner, more than likely with the next shed. Do NOT try to pull it off!

Maybe bump up the humidity next time she turns opaque.

Thanks for the reply, I was for some reason under the impression that the eye cap had to be removed before the next shed. I have had several snakes throughout the years and believe it or not, never ran into this issue before.

Thanks, Jason

You’ll also need about 10 quarts of antifreeze. Preferably prestone, no, no make that quakerstate.

Get an old pillow case and wet it.Wring out, put your snake in and lightly knot the top.Put back into cage with some of the bag over the heat.I do it at night and by morning the cap will be off. This has worked most of the time for my snakes. In case it doesnt the moisture will have it loose and gently use your fingernail to take it off.Ive seen what has happened to snakes with 2 or 3 stuck eyecaps and it isnt pretty. Most vets remove the entire eye.

If lead paint is so deadly why do they make it so delicious?

Crotalus427 Nov 18, 2007 04:35 PM

I'll have to try that if it ever comes up again. I'd put it half over the heat if you were to leave it overnight.

I used a wet q-tip once and it worked. GENTLY use a circular motion and it might come off, don’t be rough and don't force it off.

I will try the pillow case Idea and let you guys now how It works!!!!!!!!! I am also going to get some pics up soon!!!!!! Again thanks for the Ideas.
