I hav never done it, but I know you stick the probe in the vent. Obviously you are not jamming it in. If it goes deeper it is a?And if it does not go as deep then it is a? Thanks

If you've never done it, don't do it unless someone that knows how to do it can show you. You can do damage if you do it wrong...

-Ohh, what a Lady-
I will buy a probe set at the ny show this coming weekend. The person I buy from hopefully will show me.
it is actually not difficult. But yes if you have never done it get guidence. The key is to be gentle and use the right size probe. As for male and female the distance it travels in depends on the type of snake. males should travel further than females. Ball pythons females should only go a few scales,2 or 3 sometimes 4 normally, Males will go several 5,6,7 or more That depends on the Size of their Willy....LOL

My snakes aren't fat, they're big boned.
eeeeeeassssyyyy!
You grasp the base of the tail firmly...but not hard enough to alarm the snake, just enough to keep the tail from wriggling away. You lube up the probe, with vaseline, ky, whatever works for you. You slide it in one corner of the vent, and gently, GENTLY feel around a bit to see if it's going to slide in further all nice and easy. If it slides in further, it's a male, and if it doesn't, it's a female. If you're unsure, try the other side of the vent.
The important thing is that as long as you're gentle you're not going to hurt the snake. If the snake is too squirmy or active just handle it for a little while and then try again. It also helps to have someone else holding the body of the snake.
Males typically probe 6-9 scales deep, females 2-4. I usually go by easy, deep slide in means male, and a shallow or difficult slide in means female.
Good luck!
