Do beardies get depressed during shedding?

BigFil Aug 24, 2003 10:08 AM

My beardie Gollum is starting his first shedding since i've had him which is about 3 weeks. The last couple of days he seems to be depressed, just laying on his favorite branch, not moving much, and flattening out any time I am near his cage. Normally when I put his crickets in his tank in the morning/night he runs around and gobbles them up almost as quick as I put them in, but now he sits on his branch watching them in an uninterested fasion for a long time occasionally munching on one that happens to crawl in front of his face. Eventually he ends up coming down eating the rest of the crickets but just not with much enthusiasm as before. Good thing is he is still eating as much as normal just not very quick. The other wierd thing is him flattening out any time i'm in the room. He has been a little skiddish since i got him but only when picking him up, otherwise he has been really comfortable and active even when I took his whole set up to my parents house so they could watch him while I was out of town for 4 days. Has anyone else noticed this behavior while their dragon is shedding? Should I be worried? Oh yeah is just a baby around 6" snout to tail.

Maybe I need to gutload his crickets with Prozac (j/k).

Yes, BDs get grouchy during shed and it is not unusal for them to loose their appetite. With a young one, it does not last as long. Wait till they get older!

A good way to help with the shed are water soaks. Water heigth: no higher than the shoulders, temp: luke warm, the water should not feel hot nor cold on your wrist. Maintain the temp in the tub. I give my bds soaks in a plastic container.
