how hard is it to sell a snake?

erocks Nov 18, 2007 01:23 PM

Ok, for the average breeder, how hard is it to make a sale? Do most of the classified ad's produce results, or are there better alternatives?

If you are asking if you can post a snake for sale on a classifieds site and it will sell within minutes, no, not anymore. My sales are people I know on the net, locals, including my rodent suppliers, and people responding to my ads. I will be delivering my last 07 male to a local today. I saw her post on the KS forum, emailed her a great deal, and she said ok.

I've had snakes sell literally within minutes of the ad being posted, and others that have waited weeks. It's all price and availability. If you understand the law of supply and demand, then you know all you need to know on this subject.

It depends on what you are offering and what your price is.
I've had some animals sell literally within minutes of posting the ad and others take a few weeks.

It's tough to sell online right before Daytona since a lot of people are waiting to see what is at the show but afterwards and a few months prior, things sell pretty regularly.

I posted 3 snakes this past week. 2 sold for the listed price and one sold for $30 less than what I had her listed for. Funny part is the cheapest snake is the one that took the longest to sell, but still, to sell all that were listed in less than a week is pretty good. LOL. You just need to know what to charge, what people are looking for, and when the online market is good to list on.

Don't expect something to sell immediately if you list it a week before Daytona unless it is really special or listed well below market. Also, don't expect to move normal baby BP's right away when all the imports hit the market in the Spring. You may have quality CBB animals but some buyers look at the lowest price and everything else second.

I have found that sales pick up in the Fall pretty well. Just a guess but maybe it's because it's getting cooler out and people spend more time shopping online versus going out to find an animal.

Don't get discouraged if something doesn't sell right away. If you offer a quality animal at a fair price, it will sell.

Good luck and take those "I want it now" and "I'll pay you immediately" people with a grain of salt. Sometimes they do exactly what they say but I've found that a lot of times, they end up dropping off the face of the Earth. LOL.
