That's awesome! It's always cool to show kids that snakes aren't the slimy, icky creatures they might think they are.

When I was in elementary School we had a gentleman come in with snakes (including a couple balls and a burm), some lizards, and a few turtles. Since then I have been really into reptiles and have gone out of my way to help kids get in contact with some.

This year for Halloween I hung out in my house and held my snake while others were passing out candy to the kids. if the kids looked calm enough I would even let them touch her back. It was great seeing some of the kids completely ignore the candy to touch the snake.

I'm doing this tomorrow for my son's 6th grade class. I am going to take in a couple big girls and a couple smaller males. I have a male that will eat anything on demand, so I'll do a little feeding demo. F/T so the girls don't freak out...

The feeding thing can either go really great...or really bad. Before you commit (tell the class) that you're going to do a feeding demonstration, judge the general atmosphere. If there's any kids just the LEAST bit nervous about snakes, don't do the demo. At the reptile store I work for I've had a kid or two freak out just about the lizards eating CRICKETS.

During my practicum (teacher interning) I brought in all my pythons, babies to adults. I also had my friends, teachers also, bring in their animals. Between us, we had everything from baby beardies to a 5 foot long Iguana. We went an extra step to really make it educational and it was an awesome time. Good work.

...nice to see a calm blood python

Great pictures!

I am a science teacher, so I as well use animals in my classes. It is a lot of fun to interact with the students and with the animals, but I do warn against feeding a snake as part of a presentation. Some school boards have strict policies against feeding animals other animals (whether live or dead) during the school day. Some students will be against the feeding of rodents, and therefore, when feeding a snake, usually the administration recommends that it be a voluntary presentation after school, rather than an in class presentation. Not to mention, it isn't a very good idea to transport an animal after it has eaten!

Someone in a reply posted about feeding the animals while they did a demonstration.

ohhh i see. i dont feed them when im there. i also dont let anybody hold the snakes. last time a teacher insisted to hold my ball python so i let her. but ultimately i am responsible for anything that happens when im there.

j3nnay Nov 19, 2007 06:21 PM

It's not always a bad thing to let the kids hold the snakes, if you know your snake is laid back enough to tolerate it.

oh i let "kids" hold my ball python, its just that there are so many that EVERYBODY would want to hold him and theres not enough time in the day for them to. plus you dont know how parents would react if something were to happen.

j3nnay Nov 19, 2007 06:53 PM

Yeah, I was lucky that there were only 12 kids in that presentation.

In any case, it's awesome to see kids getting educated about snakes!
