Need feedback asap! What do you think?

Bloodpython171 Nov 20, 2007 01:42 PM

Hello,
This is a pic of a female 07' snow boa. Does this look like something to seriously worry about? Does it look life threatening? What do you think it is? Would you say it's permanent or would affect her breeding? Any ideas on what to do about it? Please get back to me asap, i'd really appreciate it...
thanks in advance,
Matt

Its a really bad pic, but it KINDA looks like a small Prolapse...if it is a small prolapse, I would keep an eye on it, it doesn't look really bad, but I would for the next few feedings feed much smaller prey items than you would normally feed, and keep an eye out for it getting bigger/more of a prolapse...

Best of Luck..and maybe someone else will chime in and give thier opinion...

I'd agree with the previous reply, looks like a small prolapse. A trick I learned from a reptile breeder friend is to try putting the snake in a deli cup or tupperware with a little bit of water and a little bit of sugar. That may help the prolapse go back in.

Otherwise, I'd keep the snake on damp papertowels to keep it from drying out or getting substrate on there. If it doesn't go away in a day or two I'd take it to a vet.

It's not "a little bit of sugar and a little bit of water", it's a sugar solution where you get hot water and mix sugar into it until it no longer dissolves. Soak the snake in it for a few hours, as the solution will draw excess fluids out of the tissues, reducing the inflammation. You'll then want to keep the snake on soppy paper towels so the vent doesn't dry out. I honestly wouldn't feed the snake for 2 weeks or so, and would also get a fecal done just to make sure internal parasites aren't the problem.

It's been over a year since I learned of it, and different people have different methods. That's just the method I'd heard of. It worked temporarily for the crested gecko we had to deal with, although the gecko later prolapsed again, but worse, and had to be euthanized.

Your method may be more effective. I'll keep it in mind if I ever run across a prolapse again!
