What size cage could I keep a 1.2 group in? I have that a 10 gallon wood be suitable? Could you keep rats in a a large sterlite container? or woild they chew through that pretty quickly? Any hlp is appreciated. Thanks

10 gallon size is too small.
A 10 gallon is fine for 0.2 for a maternity ward, but not suitable for 1.2 rats.
Rats will chew, they just will so if you have anything plastic it needs to be perfectly smooth so they don't have anything to start chewing on. No holes, no corners, no ridges.
Something smooth, thick and with rounded corners.

I use 20 longs with the 20 long toppers that are available at the below website. I keep 1 male and 3 females in each cage. My setups are nice size and the rats have fun. They have the option to get out of the tanks. Rats need a lot of ventilation. I would not recommend even 1 adult rat be kept in a 10 gallon.

This website is a nice way to see how many rats can very comfortably fit in a cage. Just type in the size of the cage you are interested in.

You can see my setups in the background of the pic.

i have 20 tanks set up and i have 1.2 in each 10 gallon and the offspring in the 20-30's screen tops work great especially those locking ones with twist round caps for the water bottles. I buy that 1" wire and make my own tops for them bending as needed, I wrap bailing wire around the tops of the water bottles and then tape or just newspaper with tape and use it in those covers described above. i hang it so they can't jump ontop of the bottle and chew it.

Thanks for the info, I have decided to hold off on rats at the moment and concentrate on my mouse colony. Again I appreciate the info shared here though.
