Mandarin rat & White-sided Black rat

dveysey Aug 24, 2003 11:53 AM

Does anyone know if it's possible to mate a mandarin rat and a white-sided black rat snake?

No i don't think it would be possibe!
And why on earth would you want to?

My thoughts exactly 1st I doubt it's possible and why would you want to screw up something as good looking as a mandarin even if you could? Even going beyond my personal dislike of hybrids you would be hard pressed to find a better looking species than E mandarina and the resulting offspring would most likely look like crap in comparison.

Found out it's not possible anyways. But even if it was I decided not to try to hybridize. You're right, the mandarin is a very beautiful snake and there's no reason to mess with it. Thanks for the info anyways....

Hey "hogboy", just wanted to try something different, I already have the white sided black rat female and wanted to breed her. Do you have any suggestions on which type of ratsnake to breed her with?

hogboy Aug 24, 2003 04:26 PM

You could always try something really novel like breeding it to
another white sided rat!
Seriously though i just got a group of wsbr's after much searching, they are pretty thin on the ground here in the UK
and i am constantly amazed at their beauty, they are an all time fave, also makes a change from my usual Asian rats.
Enjoy them for what they are, and feel lucky to have a great ratsnake.

You would take the sperm from the Mandarin because it's the smaller species and you would want the female to be a larger snake, like about a seven footer. You get the maximum number of eggs that way. You simply insert the syringe into the cloacal region to draw viable sperm from the sperm storage area of the male, and then transfer it into the cloacal region of the female. Make sure that this is done after each of the snakes are chilled at about 40*F. for near six months, so that you are sure the sperm is really potent and both snakes have been cycled properly. After the eggs have been fertilized then heat the female up to about 90*F, so that the eggs can develop and proceed at the proper rate, or maybe a little faster. In about a month she should be ready to lay. Incubate eggs at 95*F., give or take a half degree, and they should be done in about a week.

There's endless possibilities on the newborns. They can be anywhere from eight to fifteen inches and have a variety of colors and patterns. My favorites have always been black with yellow crossbars and white bellies up to the fourth scale row. I'm sure you will enjoy your new snakes. Good luck!!

LOL... C'mon man, everyone knows that your breeding technique will never work... you need to incubate those eggs at 100 degrees at least if you expect those eggs to hatch under 2 weeks.

Classic!

Thanks alot for your help, you've given me some great advice! My female White-sided is only about 3 feet right now but wanted to research breeding her well before she's ready. I think I will try your method when it's time. Thanks again

Don't sue me if it doesn't go perfect. I don't ever guarantee anything...LOL.

PS: If you do actually cross these species and produce some offspring, please let us know. The one good thing is that it would tell us that these species aren't as distantly related as we all thought

That the mandarin had to be the 7 footer!
