Feeding baby collards 11 weeks old

lcfish10 Nov 20, 2007 02:37 PM

hi all.......jim kendrick here
i was wondering how old baby collareds need to be to start feeding them super worms and other varieties of bugs. my baby boy and baby girl were both born September first so that makes them about 11 weeks old. i fed them each a small super worm and they loved them. after they ate those, i held a super worm up to the glass and they attacked the glass. guess they wanted more. is there a limit on how many and what size to give them?
also, i have dubia roaches in all sizes and was hoping to start feeding those also soon.
hope someone out there can give me the answers to those questions.
good luck all and happy thanksgiving.
take care

Hey Jim, As long as they are small supers, I let them have them. When you start them young they continue to enjoy them through adulthood. Small supers or freshly molted (white ones) I have found if they have never had one until older , then some will not eat them.

I also have given my youngsters very small B. dubia roaches. If they see them moving they will eat them, and seem to enjoy them. Problem is sometimes those little roaches play dead when touched, they roll over and do not move. The older collareds are on to their tricks but the youngsters if they do not see movement usually won't go after them.

Sometimes I get a shallow container, that the roaches can not climb, but the collareds can see into, and put a few small roaches in there, they can grab them when they see them moving. And that way I do not have roaches hiding out in places in the tank either.

Happy Thanksgiving to ya Jim !

hey darlin'.......jim k here dear. hope you had a nice thanksgiving weekend.
my little ones do love those super worms. infact, i think they'll attack anything that moves as long as it's smaller than they are.
i have about 30 to 40 baby dubias about 3/8" long at the moment but i am waiting till they get bit larger before i feed them to the little collards. 30 to 40 dubias at this size right now will get eaten in no time.
since they're going on 13 weeks old i am going to introduce them to a 20 gallon breeder with the full setup. they're ready i think. let me know if you disagree dear.
i started turning back the heat and lights now on my 12 adults so i can get them ready for next spring.
sure hope i can get some good pics before i put them down.
as always.........thanks for the help and hi to all.
take care
