Quick Q: How many crickets per day?

bruce_y Nov 20, 2007 05:07 PM

I've searched but haven't found any solid answers. How many crickets do juveniles (4-6 months) eat per day? How about adults (12 months)?

Also, what are equivalent numbers in superworms?

Thanks!

My 4 month juvy can eat 24-36 3/8" easily plus some greens.

you are never going to get a definite answer. Each bearded dragon eats at different rates...some will wolf down 100 appropriate sized crickets a day, some will only eat 20.

Adults should only have a few crickets daily or a couple cricket meals per week. Typically about 10-20% of their daily intake of food should be insects. Thus, if your dragon eats 100g of food, only 10-20g should be insects, the rest mixed greens, vegetables.

Younger dragons need more insects than adults. Under 8 months at least 2 meals of insects, all the dragon can eat in a 5-10 min period. Any uneating insects should be removed, especially crickets. Greens can be offered all day..and left available. Young dragons probable ignore the greens but some will nibble.

A large superworm is probably about the same as a large cricket. Superworms should als not be fed to dragons under 14" long..and only as a treat, not primary source of insect food.

Also age is not a good indicator of size. My babies hatched on 8/8 are not even 4 months old yet and are 17 1/2" long and over 300 grams. They can eat some crickets.
