I’m wondering if anyone might know the correct dosing for Baytril, more specifically in pill form. I recently had to take a snake to the vet for a possible RI, we decided to treat it with baytril and I was given Baytril pills. The snake weighed in at about eleven and a half pounds and I was told to give 3/4 of a 68mg. pill per day. I now have gone back for another snake at just over nine pounds and was given the same dose??? Is this vague/generic dosing due to the fact that it’s being ingested instead of being injected? I would imagine there is a mg/per pound dose but I may be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I tried to speak with the vet about this but they dodged my question and guarded the dosing like a family recipe.

When using enrofloxacin, or Baytril in pill form, the three-quarter pill dosage would be about as accurate as you could reasonably get with pill cutting for snakes of the weights you specified. Baytril is typically dosed at 5 mg/lb which would be 57.5 mg for a 11.5 lb snake. The rough measure three-quarter pill dose would be around 50 mg which is probably close enough for either of these two snakes at their current weights. Baytril is a fluoroquinolone class antibiotic and as such, hyper-exact dosing is not required as with some of the other more toxic antibiotics, ie: aminoglycosides class.

it also probably had something to do with the way the pills are scored, with injections its easy to vary the amt. with pills its not so easy to break then in exactpieces beyone the score lines. did you ask if you could get injectable to get a more precice dosage?
