Mattman... pastels... let me see if I understand what you are saying

CheriS Aug 24, 2003 12:48 PM

Are you meaning that unless they have clear nails they can not be Hypo's? LOL sorry, I am confused here and that may not be what you are saying.

I have some clear nail, some light creme ones, some brown and some black nail dragons and some with mixes.

I understood Hypo to be lessened or no black pigment(depending on which hypo)
I understood pastel to be lightened or pale color

If I am understanding you correct, you feel that unless from a pastel line, dragons can not be pastel?

And unless from a clear nail line they can not be hypo pastels?

Correct me if I am misreading this, I know we are discussing this in emails, but lets put it here so others can put in their input also and maybe we can all veter understand this

Hypomelanistic meaning; Having less than the normal amount of melanin. Most of us refer to it as meaning reduced black pigmentation in a dragon.

just a definition to work off of

No, hypo's can be hypo's without the clear nails. The hypo pastel line from what I understand have the traits for the clear nails and are referred by some being TRUE hypo pastels. TRUE by them meaning showing the differential trait of the clear nails.

And yes, again you are dead on with the color being pastels. Is this what is referred as the TRUE hypo pastels. I don't believe it so. Is it a name given to pastel colors. More then likely.

Pastels Colors by definition do not have brown or solid black, this could certainly lead to people calling a hypo meaning lack of dark pigment and a pastel coloring Hypo pastels without the defining clear nailed trait. Leading many to separate the two by adding (with clear nails) or adding TRUE. I never seen any body add this to any thing else except pastels.

Many have one, two pop up it's possible, Like you said in the wild all these are available, but not done regularly like hypo pastel lines. Or I guess TRUE hypo pastels, or (clear nailed) if you would like to separate the two, from pastel coloring.

Yes, I guess you can say I'm saying there are lines of pastels that just show the clear nails and breed true.

People are breeding redflames to sandfires getting pastel colors and calling them hypo pastels. Do you agree with this? Seems dangerous to me. Really confusing the two and leading people to have to make two names one TRUE one pastel. This is the bottom line. I don't agree with people attaching names without any truth in the breeding. Two top breeders will not put that name to a pastel colored dragon. I have seen this they are getting whole clutches with clear nails which are in their and mine the TRUE hypo pastels. For years now with regularity.

Yeah B22, those are what are now today known as Hypo pastel (with clear nails) or True Hypo Pastel, or just hypo pastels by the people who breed them. Damn. Confusing as hell. Anyway I just noticed that the clear nail trait happens more frequently in these then any other morph, line, thinga majig, whatever. Also so many people find the need to point it out more during sales. Never seen so many pics that can be produced showing this trait in any other color, morph, line etc. Very interesting to me. Maybe not to others who don't give a hoot, lol. Sounded like the owl who doesn't pollute Just makes them different and quite beautiful dragons in my book. Here are some examples of the hypo pastel (with the clear nails).

This is Buddy. Bought him as Hypo Pastel last year from Sandfire Stock. Picked him out of a huge box all hypo pastel clear nailed. They had three other boxes at the show.

This is Kami I got him this year as a little baby from the Dachiu's. The colors they get in their Hypo Pastels are just amazing, maybe we will see more orange, or red colored dragons with the clear nail trait very shortly . At there place out of the ones I looked at, a very thorough tour none I could see had dark nails, and they had generations.

These are pics of a few sub adults from the same clutch all showing the clear nail trait.
