OT - suggestions for other vegetarians?

el_toro Aug 24, 2003 12:48 PM

I've been trying to decide what my next reptilian family member should be. What other possibilities are there for herbivores/omnivores? I don't mind a few bugs, but I have a lot of greens going to waste with only the one plant eater! I don't have room for a green iguana, but I've been looking at Bearded Dragons and Rankins Dragons. Any others?

Thanks!

Good thought! So I have a place to start researching, what are the smaller breeds? I know SQUAT about tortoises.

Thanks!

well we have a red foot, they are like less than a foot full grown. i'm also pretty sure that greeks don't get that big. they're really easy to take care of. ours just hangs out in a big rubbermaid tub with dirt and we give her a soak a few times a week and take her outside to sit whenever we have a chance. they really don't need like heat lamps or anything, and the humidity from keeping the door closed after showers seems to be working. i'm sure there are better sources of tortoise info than me, since we only just acquiered this girl from a friend. but they are really neat, easy to take care of, and LONG LIVED.

As far as tortoises go, check out the Tortoise Trust Web site on the Web. Tortoises are very easy to keep once you have the right set up, but really do need exposure to natural sunlight and proper diet. There is an online course they offer that I highly recommend! Many of the same principles for tortoises will apply to keeping other reptiles.

the perfect animal other than a uro is a chuckwalla. chuckwalla's are basically the same exact thing as a uro but without a spikey tail, and they live in the US. They have the exact same diet as a uro, and have the exact needs as a uro.

Beardies and rankins eat a lot of crickets and when they get older they need small mice.

So i think a Chuckwalla would be the best type of lizard for your needs.

eeew - do they NEED the mice? can you get away with just crickets? that's why i can't have snakes even though they're fab. i just can't give them mice...

thanks! i'll look into chuckwallas, too!

They only eat vegetables and greens, they are VERY easy to tame, they are funny to observe and as they are nocturnal they dont mind to keep you company until 3Am, while you watch TV!lol!

By the way,i posted below the photo of my MTS.His name is Leonardo and while i type this message he is on the top of my head!lol!
