NEW IND PRESS (Chennai, India) 17 November 07 Students dispel myth on snakes
Bhubaneswar: In their quest to unravel the mysterious world of snakes, a group of students of DAV Public School have come up with findings that throws new light on the creatures.
They have discovered that just eight out of the 53 species of snakes found in Orissa are poisonous. The students studied their habitat, food identification, distribution habitat, venom and how far the venom leads to human deaths.
The study was carried out as part of their project on biodiversity titled ‘conservation of snakes.’ It will be presented in the ensuing National Children’s Science Congress.
On several prejudices surrounding them, they concluded that most of them are misplaced. For example, bronze back snakes in South, contrary to popular belief, never climb on tree tops to witness the last rites of their victims.
Experts like ‘snake man’ Subhendu Mallik and Regional Museum of Natural History have praised their project work.
The students said that with little study conducted on this subject, they decided to take it up. Their message to all is: “stop killing snakes and help in conserving them.”
