WINK (Fort Myers, Florida) 22 November 07 Thanksgiving Iguana? (Lindsay Liepman)
You may have had an uninvited guest show up to your house this Thanksgiving.
But we promise you, it's nothing like what arrived in a Cape Coral neighborhood.
He's about four feet long, has a scaly back, and ferocious teeth.
Yes it's an iguana.
And his cameo appearance in Cape Coral was all caught on tape.
"Lord, let's please not have lizard for dinner any night soon," prayed one guest around the Thanksgiving table.
It was a typical Thanksgiving...turkey, mashed potatoes...and then something else showed up.
"Tonight we have a Thanksgiving iguana," said William Schwartz.
Schwartz and his friends were casting a net in their canal, when the iguana surfaced.
"All of a sudden one of the girls spotted this big old lizard out there and after several attempts we nabbed Spike here," said Schwartz.
Kira Frye was behind the camera and couldn't believe it.
"Oh, my God he caught it," she screamed.
You could call Schwartz the Cape Coral Crocodile Hunter.
He's not afraid of reptiles.
And actually enjoys them.
"What you've really got to look at for is the teeth and the tail," he said.
Rogue iguanas can damage the local eco-system and threaten plant life, people and pets.
Schwartz his own theory as to how this one ended up in a neighborhood.
"Somebody must of got sick of them and they must of escaped and they're breeding out there. It's perfect for them."
Schwartz is contacting the proper authorities to turn over the iguana.
Also, we don't recommend you handle an iguana.
You should call a professional or Florida Fish and Wildlife if an iguana shows up in your neighborhood and you have questions.
