Southern hogs won't eat......

kammekammo Nov 23, 2007 10:28 AM

I just got a pair of southern hogs about a month ago and i can't get either one of them to eat. They are about 2 1/2 months old now and were "supposedly" feeding when i got them. Well i tried every trick in the book and literally every trick i read on here and nothing! I even tried little green tree frogs which they were supposed to be feeding on when i got them. I have a bunch of easterns and a western so i am not new to hog's i have had my share of problem feeders but nothing like these. Does anyone have any advice or something they know might work. These are my first southerns and i really don't want to force feed them unless it comes down to the last resort.

All I can say is READ as much as you can on them and do your best! The day that it's illegal to sell wildcaught southern hogs will be a good day in my book! Kevin

You might want to try toads. I have been having some troubles with a few Westerns this year. THey really seemed to respond well to scented. I am not really sure what you tried. But there are plenty of helpful people on here.

Yeah i read every thread on here about people with picky eaters and i tried them all. I tried toads, green tree frogs, salamanders, tuna juice, salmon juice, i even tried small anoles. I have had hogs that didnt want to eat but these are the most stubborn ever. Usually i would know how to fix it but these like i said are my first southers and i was hoping someone knows something i don't. Which im sure there are alot of.

southerns are visual not scent oriented watch the vids start food far away act like a toad approach from an angle but not right at him . do not clank the food on the bottom of container muffle noise with paper towel under container. think toad small jumps little turns use tongs mare than 10 in.

I have a picky western that I have to trick. I have a tiny toad that I keep as a pet, jsut for this purpose, and what I do is let the hog TRY to bite the toad, but slip a pinkie in his mouth when he does.
