Suggestions for Next King...

Geckofanatic23 Nov 24, 2007 02:16 AM

Hey there everyone, I just want you guys' opinions on what kingsnake subspecies I should get next. I love my Splendida and MBK, they're by far my favorite snakes in my collection. What do you guys think I should get next? I know that everyone here loves brooksi kings, but they're ridiculously overpriced in my area, and I'm hesitant about having one shipped. Locally, the most affordable animals are cal kings, closely followed by San Luis Potosi. This is going to be my last snake for a while, and I really want something that will round out my group when it comes to personality and behavior. Any suggestions are welcome, I love to see your personal preferences in kings. Thanks for any replies!

I have to say that the Thayeri are my favorite. With so much variation in colors and the different patterns to choose from (milksnake phase versus leonis phase), you can find one that looks beautiful to you. If you can attend a local reptile show, you may find some really great prices, too.
My very first pet snake is a Thayeri that got me hooked on snakes. He's still my favorite. He is so docile and beautiful and has never bitten anyone in the time I've had him. I like to let little kids pet him to learn that snakes aren't "slimy" or "bad".
Good luck with your decision. I hope you'll let us know what you decide to bring home next.
Vicky

Here's a beautiful Thayeri. If you click on the "mexicana" subforum under kingsnakes, you can see lots of beautiful pictures and learn a lot from people who have been hooked even longer than I have been.

Once you have the itch how do you stop scratching it?

OH GOD!!! If only I could round out my collection. It's an endless cycle. Too much stuff I want and very little I want to part with. I need a bigger house LOL.

Question; have you ever kept a snake you caught your self? I don't know how you feel about keeping wild caught but since you said you are apprehensive about shipping and not much available to you inexpensive, hunting and collecting (never too late to flip tin) one snake might be a good way to feel more rounded about your collection. But, if you prefer to buy, buy what you like. Round off your collection with a mate for something you have?

From looking at what you have it would be hard to tell what you might like next. You give us some suggestions and maybe we can help direct you to a good source.

San Luis Potosi or Mex-Mex are a good choice. They are kind of like a Mountain King with the calmness of a Corn Snake. They don't have the variability of a Cal. King, but they are beautiful in their own right. Another bonus, depending on how you look at it, is that not everybody is working with them, unlike Cal. Kings. Either way both Kings are a good choice.

hey guys, whats up today? if you have the "fever" that many of us have on this forum there is no way you can really "round out" your collection. mine is constantly evolving with new interests and projects but the snakes with which i will always work with are the very same ones i collected as my "big game" animals as a kid and teen, namely eastern kings, northern pines, okeetee corns, and edbs(although i have no hots in my home owing to my wonderful lack of self discipline, lousy reflexes, and senility(in other words i'd get tagged in no time).everyone has their own particular fancies, just go with what you truly enjoy working with. my next snakes? probably going to bug my buddy dennis and get some jungle carpets , or perhaps some nice diamondXjungle crosses, indigos already on the way-funny how these are all snakes i have worked with in the past.

You can never have enough of those bighty little bastards. I hope you had a great trip to NY, and had a great Thanksgiving. I hope your mother didn't cook the turkey. LOL!!

Thanks Howie. I don't think I can make it to the Wings on Monday, my pesky day job conflicts. I'll call after work on Monday, maybe I can stop by for a visit. I smoked a turkey with a twelve gauge! You finally found a use for that giant rolling paper that came with your Cheech and Chong album!

That must have been some turkey!

funny one!! that sure would roll a hell of a bomber! hey, this is reptile related, How many respected biologists have been killed by stingrays? None

antelope Nov 24, 2007 01:32 PM

As always Howie, you crack me up! As for rounding out the Lamps? Hoo-boy, can it ever be done? LOL, well, with your tendency it seems a real purty speckled king is in order! Maybe a nigra, black king as they are often overlooked, or a calligaster, prairie king, another overlooked species. I personally would go the thayeri or holbrooki route, as I am partial to them.

Thanks, and back at ya Howie, I can remember my old man coming out of the bedroom all sleepy eyed looking at me like I was nuts, as I was howling and rolling on the floor watching the Grail, he sits down, watches for about 10 secs., shakes his head at me and proclaims me the village idiot! Those were the days! Post 'em up Howie, would love to see 'em, it's gonna be a loooong winter!

Now YOU stay 'ere and make sure 'E doesn't leave, alrigh'?

Patton Nov 24, 2007 04:40 PM

Hey Todd,
I have a funny story about the first time I saw The Holy Grail.
I was in my senior year of high school, hanging out with some friends at a small house party. Needless to say after a couple of hours of playing poker, and losing my shirt, and pounding beers like all good high school seniors do. I was hammered. Another satisfied customer!!! So I decided to lay down on the couch and get my second wind. When I woke up, there were a few of my buddys still playing poker. I crawled up to the table, and started to tell them about this crazy dream I had just had. There was this crazy blood thirsty rabbit that was attacking these knights! Man, isn't that weird?!!! They all looked at me and started laughing and pounding the table. They then explained to me that I had been watching Monty Python's Holy Grail. Yeah, I got ribbed for years about that one.

Well, there are some good prices on Brooks., depending on what type of Brooks you want. But as fo another you can not go wrong with an Eastern King. They get big, very friendly and are usually a great price. My female is a big baby, and always want out to be held.

I had bred to get the lightest and brightest for some time and also decided I like the very dark ones too, but had sold them off by then...When I find more like that I'll probably get more.
