Arizona Green Ratsnakes (10-07)...

ratsnakehaven Nov 25, 2007 08:21 AM

Well, I was talking to Todd recently and he mentioned green rats, so I thought I'd throw up a couple I've seen this fall. I visited Pima County, AZ in late September and made several trips up into the mountains. Both rats were seen after dark on the roads.

Here's a pic of the habitat. It's a little dark, as the sun was going down...

An adult male...

A young, adult female...

We should be finished moving to AZ by next fall and I hope to be able to study green ratsnakes from the area. These guys have one of the most interesting natural histories of any American species.

Cheers...TC

Nice post and photos, Terry! Love those Arizona green rats, and I'm looking forward to your studies of them.

Thanks very much, Bill. I know, I'm liking it already. Are you retired?

Yup...
I took an early retirement in '03 and ceremoniously threw away my wrist watch!
My wife and I ask each other "how did we have enough time to raise a family and work?" We are constantly busy.
Good Luck

I know what ya mean. Everyone asks me what I'm doing with all my free time, ahaha! I've been so busy, I wonder how I ever made time for a job.

Very cool, Terry. Please keep us posted with your move and research. There's still a lot to learn about Western Green rats.

Thanks, Tim, and I certainly will. Green rats live in an awesome environment, which I plan to spend a lot of time in. They are also a terribly interesting animal and not a lot has been written on their biology and natural history. Let's hope their habitat remains intact and climate doesn't change too fast.

We have bought an old home in the Santa Cruz Valley and will be selling our present home next spring and moving things to AZ.

What range did you find your first in? I found my first in the Chiricahuas in 2002. Was it a November record? What size and sex was it?

Cheers...Terry
