Update on anery

rdude110 Nov 25, 2007 10:41 AM

He shed a few days affter the first pic i showed you. His colors are like 1000x better now. It also seems to have a genetic thing that makes it bite, and hard. Its about 20 inches

It sounds like he doesn't like you very much. You should give him to me since he's obviously not happy with his current living arrangements, just kidding (But seriously if you ever decide he's too good looking to keep I'd be happy to bear that burden by taking him off your hands)

I think that there is little doubt that this will be genetic. This line of anery will blow the other line out of the water . It will be interesting to see it as an adult. No offense to the other line, but an adult sharp anery is a rather dull brown and not very attractive.

natsamjosh Nov 25, 2007 07:03 PM

I absolutely agree this snake is more attractive than the Sharp
anery,at least from the pictures I've seen of both. But I'm not sure it's fair to compare them yet, or even call this new snake simply an "anery." Who knows what it will look like in a year or two? And if it does stay the same color,
my speculation is that there is more than just anerythrism going on. I would guess the melanins are out of whack also.

Thanks,
Ed

Or could be yellow pigment as well as orange pigment are
not produced or blocked in Ryan's snake. I wonder if any formal research has been done on rainbow boas? Testing skin samples for the different types of pigment cells would probably be helpful. Anyone have any contacts in the world of academia that would be interested in a herp research project?

Thanks,
Ed

Just kidding!! Your luck to find such an incredible animal at a pet shop is what we all dream of!

BuzzardBall Nov 25, 2007 05:21 PM

Never chimed in on this one, but read all the posts! Congrats on a great find! Maybe this is the missing piece, in keeping the anerys "black and white" as adults! Good luck! Hopefully the best $300 you ever spent!

Z_G_Reptiles Nov 25, 2007 06:10 PM

finally an anery thats black and gray scale, i dont care for the other anerys out there, but something like that i'd be intersted in, good luck on proving it out

...don't take any chances with it, as soon as anything changes/goes wrong get immediate help/attention. Don't wanna take any chances with as promissing a snake as that not to mention lost potential income. I assume you've already gotten all the info on basic care you need whether you wanted it or not lol

Best of luck with it and don't let it go at least until you've bred him/her a few times.

Sean.

Personally, I would consider serious offers. There
is a risk in keeping the snake in hopes of proving
the morph. It may be unlikely, but for all we know
the snake could be that color because it has a terminal
disease. The snake could die from an infection or
food related parasites. The snake may not even want to
breed, and if the morph is even proven, that will take
at least 5 or 6 years.

I'm not the owner, so it's no my decision. But there are
(financial) risks either way. (Of course, there may be
non-financial reasons to keep the snake, that's another factor.)

Ok, that's my serious post for the week.

Thanks,
Ed

If you are unable to breed it, loan it to me (or even someone else) for one season. Would be a shame to not propogate that killer looking BRB!!!

If loaned to me he'd get top choice of my collection (several females) and you'd get a slew of babies out of the deal!!!!

some from yougladly and I had a really long post typed out and it seemed more appropriate for e-mail so I just deleted it but definately don't sell it unless you know what's worth and you have to breed it or at least what Dave mentioned I would loan her someone with a really nice hypo of the opposite sex and a yellow normal if it's a male or take your pick if it's female . If I were you I would get a hypo for a mate so as to possibly have double hets working instead of one gene and when you breed the offspring together to prove it out and back to your "originator" you could possibly have 3 morphs being hypo, what you got already "aneryish" and maybe a few ghosts which are homozygous hypo and anery if you into the genetics thing which is awesome. take care Ryan
Bob

rainbowsrus Nov 26, 2007 05:04 PM

If your's is an anery (type whatever), and is a recessive trait...

When bred to a hypo would indeed make double hets. Bred back to the originator would make 1/2 anery 50% het hypoi and 1/2 het anery 50% het hypo. Only way to get a ghost is if BOTH parents each have at least one each of the anery and hypo genes.

You would have the ingredients for the ghost, wouold have to mix them the right way to get there.

I should put less words in a sentence huhlol but you know what I meant that the offspring would have a chance at producing 3 visual morphs (2 morphs 1 designer morph) and the offspring back to the originator would yield only one visual being aneryish 50% hypo (ghost if its anery) and prolly recessive if it's genetic so thanks for the correction Dave
Dave

p.s. back to cooking grill cheese for the kid lol

rainbowsrus Nov 26, 2007 05:33 PM

I knew what you meant but then again, I've been delving into morphs for a while and can do punnet square calcs in my head.

Was really for Ryan as he's somewhat new to the whole genetic morph thing so want to keep him straight. I know from experience, better to learn it right the first place then to learn it wrong and then have to re-learn. No real delete key on the human brain, at least not one that can be directed at anything specific!!

Oh, absolutely it's an awesome pet! You do whatever
you want with it, it's yours to enjoy!! I was just trying to
point out that if you do keep it as an investment (ie, to breed), there are financial risks of doing that, vs. selling the snake now.

Thanks,
Ed

Congrats on this find - and this pic really shows the snakes coloring.

I have one of my new babies that is just nasty and bites all of the time. I hope she calms down with some regular handling.

Almost afraid to ask, was the nasty one from me? They were all fine when I had them, but I don't really "handle" them, just take care of tub cleaning etc.
