Looking for trough enclosure ideas

Geezle Nov 25, 2007 10:59 AM

So I’m festering on what I should do as far as caging goes for my timor monitor. Right now he’s in a 4x4x2 enclosure made of wood and plexiglass but I know that it’s not nearly tall enough for an arboreal monitor such as a timor.

At first I was thinking about just building a new top for my current enclosure to give him some more height, but now I’m thinking about maybe getting a smallish trough and building a tall top to close it in.

I guess I’m mostly looking for some pics or ideas for this, particularly dealing with how you would attatch a wooden top on a trough that has rounded ends without leaving big gaps and so on.

Hi!
If you'll search the forums for "trough" & "stock tank" you will get plenty more ideas than you will from this post. I know several pics have been posted within the last month, so scanning thru the 4 pages here at your firngertips will help.

Also take a look at ProExotics.com's FAQ and photo gallery.

Once you get the general idea, if you have any specific questions don't hesitate to come back & ask.

Have a good one!

How much do water troughs cost?

The CHEAPEST 3x2x8 stock tank is from tractor supply, which is 2hrs away, but only $170.

The CLOSEST 3x2x8 stock tank is 30min away, but for $250!!!

That's a $80 difference. I live in San Francisco and I'm having a really hard time finding a stock tank of that size around my area, for a decent price. I'll have to ask my friend for his truck, and doubt he would want to drive out that far. How much did you pay for your stock tank?

I haven't actually gotten the trough yet, at this point I'm mostly looking for ideas before I commit to anything financially. I'm in Edmonton, AB Canada and there's a couple surplus and farm supply places I'm going to check out when I have some free time. I'm sure the prices will be different for you, but I can post what I find out when the time comes just as a sort of point of reference if you'd like.

Yea, thanks. It's just that I noticed the further away from the city, the cheaper the stock tanks are. I will have to ask a friend to use his truck, so I'm trying to find one as close to the city as possible, and at the same time paying a decent amount for it. Isn't $250 for a 3x2x8 stock tank A LOT, considering other places are selling them for $170? I just don't want to be ripped off, and I don't want to support people that overcharge for their products.

While it may seem like they are overcharging to you they may not necessarily be overcharging. Stock tanks are in much more demand in rural areas than in urban ones so a rural feed store may puchase more than an urban store and get price breaks for buying a larger quantity. The opposite happens with non-farm items such as food and clothes in rural areas. Overhead for an Urban store is much higher than in a rural area as real estate prices an property taxes are usually higher and this increase is reflected in the prices. You should consider if the lower price is worth the extra amount of money you will pay in gas which we all know too well is a LOT higher than it was in years past and if it is worth the 2hrs (is that one way or round trip? that adds up to alot of gas.How much are you paying in S.F.???)time you have to spend retrieving the tank.

check out our trough FAQ at the link.

as for cost, small troughs may cost mega bucks in the fancy pants big city (dang city slickers, with their high speed internet and running water!) but here in cowtown (Denver) they are much much cheaper. like $65 for a 3 ft trough.

all depends on where you are located : )
