I'm getting a corn snake! Any advice?

VariableEnigma Nov 25, 2007 05:43 PM

So I'm getting a corn snake over the holidays. I'm going to pick one out of a bunch of babies (they're still in quarrentine) on Thursday, and the store is going to keep it until I'm back from traveling for Christmas.

I'm pretty excited. I hope to find a blizzard, lavendar, or opal.. I think white snakes are absolutely striking. I was also hoping to get a female- but I'm not really set on that because I don't know why I want it to be a girl.. IS there any difference at all between males and females (besides genitalia) when it comes to corn snakes?

I've been doing a lot of reading and research, so I know the basics, but is there any other information that could be useful?

Thanks in advance,
Amanda

Unless you plan om breeding I wouldnt worry too much about male or female. (But find out for sure incase you decide to breed him/herlater)If you would like a good book to help you I highly recommend either:
Cornsnakes In Captivity by Don Soderberg, www.cornsnakes.net
or
Corn Snakes: The Comprehensive Owners Guide by Kathy & Bill Love, www.corn-utopia.com

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

I agree completely. If you can afford it, I'd suggest getting both books.

Also, I have found that one snake is impossible to keep: it's like trying to eat one potato chip. Find space for a second enclosure because sure as shootin' you're going to want another snake soon after you get the first!

I agree with the second enclosure! At the end of October I came home with a ball python. Today my boyfriend came home with a beautiful corn snake. We actually had a 10 gallon aquarium that we are using for the corn. We had the ball in it when we brought him home. Now the ball is in a 40 gallon tank. I'm getting some cages made for the snakes next spring. Also getting 2 red tails.
