GIANT SURINAME REDTAIL

herpsltd Nov 25, 2007 06:26 PM

This is the largest Boa I have ever seen. In the early 1980's this giant was imported from Suriname. She was collected in the south near the Sippilliwinni Savannah. Although we could never straighten her completely out she measured close to 15' long. Holding her from left to right is Larry Robertson, Chris McQuade, and myself. Check the size of her head comparing it to us. We're all pretty big boys and she had a huge head. This is the FIRST time this pic has been made public anywhere. Sorry about the photo but it's too brittle to scan. ENJOY!! Tom Crutchfield

Fantastic picture, but there is no way that snake measured anywhere near 15 foot. Based on that measurement you are all around around 9ft tall or over. I would put that snake closer to 10ftto 11ft based on the average length of the male human arm being around 2.5ft. Great photo however.

Warren, Chris is about 6'2". lOOK AT THE SNAKE AND THE CURVES IT HAS AND DO THE MATH....TC

OKAY! I look at the snake, and the curves, and taking into consideration the proportions I still don't see a 15ft snake. Its a big snake, but I don't see 15ft.

I can see no less then 12-13feet !!
From where Chris is holding the animal there is well over 6' to the tail, easily double that to the other end. Straighten that big girl out and theres another foot or two easy.
Awesome animal !! what a privilege it must have been to handle such a beast.

Thanks for sharing TC

I used to have a 11 foot BCI and she would have been dwarfed by the boa in that pic. I played around with Tom's pic using snakemeasurer.exe Using 6'2" for the Chris in the middle (and had to guess at 4" - 6" of his feet cut off) I managed to get to 11' - 12' easily and that is a tensed up, not proper orientation snake with bends I can't measure. I can see it easily being that additional few feet if measured correctly.

I had this 5 ft. female boa. She gave birth. I picked her up to remove her from her cage. She was limp as a noodle. In this state, she was at least another foot long. I believe Tom's estimate is accurate and correct.

In that case I stand corrected. AS I said earlier it is an incredible photo. There was a photo several years ago that the late Clvie Osbourne of Troical Anura (UK) had on his website. It featured a huge surinam wrapped around his body and leg, caught in Surinam quie a few years back.
